Replaced hard drive but unable to re-install version of windows

My hard disk failed and I have installed a new western digital 1600bevs. Now when I go through re-installing windows vista on my dell laptop vostro 1700 it seems to go through the configuration stages ok but then hangs.
If I then try to boot from safe mode it runs the script of loading files and then says please wait - nothing ever happens after this.
Startup repair function does similar running for hours and finding nothing wrong - but it never seems to complete I am contacting western digital myself because vista doesnt recognize the drive functions like format and partition, not only that, even after I install on the drive, the damn installation fails after final reboot. No OS!!! all that time for nothing. So I need the drivers too

Hi,
have you checked is the drive detected in the system bios, because if it is detected in system bios only then can vista install on it, start the system and at the blue dell logo tap F2 to enter setup and check if you see the newly installed hard drive on the system bios.

there are no drivers required for a hard drive.
Windows 7 should automatically detect the new hard drive and it should show up in disk management to format or prompt you to format.
Check your cable connections again.
Otherwise your new hard drive may be DOA. Return it to the store that you purchased from.

It's possible that your disk-drive is "failing", and it's about to "die".

Buy a new disk-drive, connect it, and try to install to it.

Other possibilities:
* bad RAM in your computer is messing-up the file-copy operations, and the CD-reading operations
* dying motherboard is malfunctioning,
* scratched Windows CD-ROM media
* malfunctioning CD-reader device.

My computer HDD have bad sactors please help to remove this on

When a hard disk has bad sectors, these sectors can be fixed by running check disk. This is a temporary fix as the hard disk is nearly worn out and it will get more bad sectors and evenually the hard disk will fail completely.
Bad sectors occur when the magnetic oxide on the disk platters is worn out and data cannot be written or read from these sectors.
To run check disk click Start - My Computer - right click on C Drive and click on Properties - click on Tools tab - then Check Now in Error Checking
I suggest once this has been done, you back up your data and purchase a new hard disk ready to install Windows etc. when the hard disk fails completely. You may want to install a new hard drive before the old hard drive fails completely.

Go to add new hardware wizard. This may not come with a disk if you do have a disk it will ask you to put disk in. If you do not find it there go to the HCL directory of the western digital website for installation directions.

Replaced hard drive but unable to re-install version of windows

I don't know how old is your laptop I know a lot of people they try to install larger hard drive but you have to check if your laptop or PC will see that hard drive some it will automatic will will do partition like for the original hard drive capacity and the rest will be hidden. Research your laptop capabilities up to how many gigs can operate. click start, click control panel, click administrator tools, on the left side you will see disk management, click disk management, and you will see the C: drive and will show how many gig and the rest will be not format and partition. I hope this will solve your problem. You can format the rest of the hard drive and rename and asign D: or H.

Western Digital 250GB External Hard Drive not working

there are a couple of reasons for this. Likely the drive has not been setup in Windows. Hard drives need to setup in Disk Management. Disk Management can be found under Computer Management in the Control Panel. After you run Computer Management, expand the Storage tab and Disk Management is located there. At the bottom of the screen threre is a listing of all drives (hard and CD) located in or attached to system... You will see your new drive listed, but not active. Right click on the new drive in the bottom window and Windows will prompt you on how to configure the drive. You'll need to activate so Windows can assign a drive letter to the drive, partition and format. Once this is done, you will be able to see and use the drive under windows.

I've attached a link from Western Digital that provides their FAQ response to your issue.....

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1017&p_created=1055796499&p_sid=7R8631pj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTQsMTQmcF9wcm9kcz0yMjgsMTAxLDIxOSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9My4yMTkmcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PXJlY29nbml6ZWQ*&p_li=&p_topview=1

You didn't mention what type of connection it uses (USB, etc). According to Western Digital, if you have a USB External Drive, you should get a prompt to install drivers by Windows when a new device is installed. Similar for Firewire device.... Did Windows "recognise" the new device by opening a New Device Found window? If not, try using a different USB port and/or ensure the USB port is enabled in WIndows.... The Quick Start guides for all models can also be found from the link provided above.
