    cheers for your help

i was checking the disc just now and the jumpers are set to slave

just wondering if there is any i can format the disc somehow????

  • Allan Kierszten Feb 28, 2009

    thanx for your help

still not fixed yet but i'm keeping on trying

i will let you know as soon as i figure it out

  • Allan Kierszten Feb 28, 2009

the main problem i have is that the disc is out of the pc and when i try to put it back in thats when the problem starts everything is ok until i plug the blue end of the ide cable into the motherboard then the monitor switches off and says no signal

hope this makes sense to you

it may be a faulty ide cable, socket or i think its because the drive has an old operating system on

i think the only i can format this drive if i was to buy a case and try plugging it in to the usb port

unless you know anyway i can scrub this drive before i put it back in the pc

    thanks anyway

It is more likely that if you have a system installed on it that you still have the jumpers set to MASTER. you need to change them to SLAVE.

    yes you can

Windows - Second Drive Format Steps: Format a Computer Hard Drive or Disc Drive.

First make a Startup Disk: To create
a Startup Disk, click the Add/Remove Programs icon in
    Windows Me/98 Control Panel. WebTechGeek.com

    1. You can start by double-clicking on the
My Computer icon. Now click the second drive icon to select
    it.

    2. Now open the File menu and select Format.
The format window should displays the hard disk capacity.

    3. You need to select Format type and enter
a disk label (name). If you want to Boot up from your
second drive, you need to check the "Copy system files"
    box.

    4. Now click Start. Windows displays a warning
box. After you read the warning, and then click OK to
begin formatting. Warnings: The format procedure deletes
all files on the hard disk, This action is not reversible.
Be sure to back up any files you want to keep. Format a Computer Hard Drive or Disc Drive. Remember
to come back to WebTechGeek.com for more How to tips!

You may need to use FDISK to Partition
Your New Drive; how to in Windows
: Format a Computer Hard Drive or Disc Drive.

In Windows, click Start > Programs >
MS-DOS Prompt. Type fdisk at the DOS prompt and press
Enter. Press Enter again to allow the hard disk to be
formatted (later) in 32-bit FAT format,

Now press 5 to change the current fixed disk drive and
then press Enter. You are going to format the second drive,
your new drive, make sure that you don't format
the first drive (the C drive). Then press 2 (to format
the new drive) and press Enter.

You need to press 1 and then Enter to create a DOS partition
    on drive 2.

Now press 1 again, and then press Enter to create a primary
DOS partition. You want to create a primary DOS partition
to allow this partition to become the bootable volume,
    the C: drive.

Now press Enter to use the maximum available size of
your new hard disk for the primary DOS partition. All
drives less than 8GB will use 4K clusters for file storage.
You might as well format the whole drive as one primary
partition unless you have criteria other than optimal
file storage space efficiency for dividing the drive.
Now press Esc to end FDISK.

OK reboot Windows, and your new formatted hard drive
will be recognized as drive D:. The second primary partition
is assigned the drive letter D: Format a Computer Hard Drive or Disc Drive.

i put a small 4.3gb drive into my pc today and it shows in the bios but not on the system once windows has booted. my drive is corrupted. is this the same problem as yours? have you got a faulty drive? it may not be able to fix. i will look for some hard drive checking software for you. you may be able to pull it back. i will post back soon.

an operating system on a slave drive would not be an issue because there is no boot log for dos to enter onto that drive for system information.
are you plugging this in while the computer is running?
have you been into bios and auto searched for new drives before boot up?
try removing your cd player(that works) and use that ide plug and power connection to try the hard drive.
then if the drive works you can start with the cheap parts to test first, the IDE cable being just a few pence.
if your drive does not work or does the same error in the cd ide come back and i will run through a few more things with you.

Only work inside the computer case when the power has been switched off and disconnected. Never open the power source.

Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE,SATA

the leads from your (motherboard to your hard drive) make sure they have secure dust free connections and are not faulty

If its a 40 pin flat ribbon type it will be the first to fail.

Even something as small as a faulty electrical fan and its lead can cause you problems

computers need all power and data to continue through every working device and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error.

Make sure your graphics card is securely seated with no dust built up or in the socket

if you remove your graphics check the socket to make sure its dust free.

Restart your computer then reinstall it this should activate found new hardware wizard

Check the VGA cable connection running from the computer to the monitor.

This cable must be completely inserted into both VGA connection ports, otherwise the video signal is not going to reach the display.

Disconnect the VGA cable from the computer and monitor, then look at the metal connectors on both ends.

If you are missing connection pins, the video signal is not going to transfer between hardware correctly.

To fix this problem, you must obtain a new VGA cable (at any computer or electronics store) to send the video signal.

Examine the power connection on the monitor.

If the monitor is not receiving power, it is not going to turn on.

Turn off the monitor for a few minutes, then power it back on.

Like other computer hardware, the monitor may not initially turn on correctly.

Move the mouse and press the "Enter" key on the computer keyboard.

If the computer is in sleep mode, the monitor is going to appear as if it does not have any display.

Hope this helps.

When I open Dell 24000 I get an error sign primary drive 0 not found It tells me to hit f2-- but when I do I get no response. A colleague told me it was a loose cable so i have opened the tower but I do...

the hard drive IDE cables are flat, ribbon cables, usually grey and about 3 inches wide. do not confuse this with the floppy drive cable, which will look identical, except that it is 2 inches wide.

the cable could be loose on either the motherboard IDE controller end or the hard drive end, so wiggle it in tighter, or unplug and then re-plug it at both ends, and then try to boot. if that does not work, then replace the cable.

if a new cable does not fix it, then the hard drive itself may have failed. install the hard drive in a DIFFERENT working computer as a secondary (slave drive) by installing it to the middle connector of the IDE cable (IDE cables have a connector for the "master" or only drive at the end, and a plug for a "slave" drive in the middle of the cable), and see if you can access it. it will probably show up as the "E" drive under "computer" or "my computer". if it does not show up, check and see if it shows up under "administrative tools>computer management>disk management". if the drive is not showing up, then it is dead. if the drive works in the second computer, then the IDE CONTROLLER is the culprit.

if the motherboard's integrated IDE controller is dead, you may want to try the OTHER IDE controller socket. most computers from that era have 2 IDE controller sockets, and usually attach the hard drive(s) to one, and the cd/dvd rom(s) to the other. since the hard drive cables have plugs for 2 devices, you can attach both the hard drive and a single cd/dvd drive to the 2nd ide controller socket, in cases where the 1st ide controller soocet no longer works. attach the hard drive to the end of the IDE cable, and the cd/dvd drive to the middle of the IDE cable, as the "master" or boot device should always be attached to the end of the IDE cable.

you can also purchase an add-in, pci card ATA/IDE controller card, and use this instead of the motherboard's integrated IDE controller sockets.

Issue Installing 4th Drive Device (2 DVD Drives and 2 Harddrives)

You cannot plug an IDE ribbon in the floppy slot (port). The total IDE drives you can install is four (4). But check your jumper configuration. The DVD & DVD/CD-ROM cannot have the same jumper configuration to share the same IDE slot. One has to be MASTER (MS) and the other SLAVE (SL). Or you may put both drives on CABLE SELECT (CS).

Did you connect the drive to cable spot closest to the motherboard on the primary IDE channel? is it formatted? Did you try the drive on the Second IDE channel? Can your system support a 160 GIG drive?(if not try partitioning the drive.). Is the power and data cable connected properly?(the red line on the data cable should be closest to the power plug on the drive.)
