Question about Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 Flatbed Scanner

Problems with my scanner (CanonScan Lide 25)

My scanner (CanonScan Lide 25) is connected to my computer and the lock switch is set to UNLOCKED. But when I try to scan something my scanner sounds like it's starting the scan but after 2 seconds it stops and this message appears on my screen : "Release the lock switch. detach the I/F cable and reconnect. Scanner driver will be closed." When I click "OK" this message also appears "Unable to open TWAIN source.Please check connection. Then re-start Toolbox."
Could my cable be broken or one of the USB entrance? Please help me if you know what could be the problem.

This happened to me - my scanner is properly unlocked but a popup message keeps telling me to unlock the switch. I have tried several solutions shared by other users (added path for twain_32, locked/unlocked/replugged USB, uninstall/reinstall), everything did not work until I tried using a third party software. My scanner now works fine, I'm glad I didn't dispose of it after years of "not working". My conclusion - CanoScan Toolbox has issues.

    VueScan, but you have to buy the license. Weigh first which option is more economical - to buy a new scanner vs the software license. When you use the trial version of this software, scanned images come with watermarks. As a workaround for low-res scans such as ID photos or cards, I screen-captured the preview screen which has no watermarks, and paste in Photoshop or MS Word, then crop. Of course this low-res screen capture won't do for scanned documents as the text won't be readable at such low resolution. In that case, you'd really need the paid license.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 100 Flatbed Scanner Release lock switch

Beneath the scanner is a lock switch, ensure that it is in the unlocked position.

If it is in the unlocked position and it still displays this error message then you will need to get a technician to free the reader assembly and give it a clean. Not too big a job. It's a good little scanner I enjoy mine, even after the same thing happened to it.

I lost my canoscan lide 20 installation cd

I cannot use scanner Lide 25.. because show error : "release the lock switch,detach the I/F cable and reconnect" How solution?

Sounds like the scan head is locked. This is usually done so you can transport the scanner without bouncing the scan head out of alignment. Look under the scanner and you will see it. Make sure it's in the UNLOCKED position. You may need to power the unit off/on to reset it or restart your computer to get a fresh attempt at the scanner.

If you do not have the software, you need to download the software from one of the following locations:

Official Canon Drivers and Software


After downloading is finished, unplug the scanner USB and run the software that you downloaded.
The software installer will tell you when to connect USB.

Use the software that came with the scanner (PhotoStudio). However, in ScanGear you can change the scaling settings prior to scanning. Increasing this percentage will tell the scanner to capture more data by increasing the resolution at which it is scanning.
