If the lens is clean, then either the optics have failed or they are significantly out of alignment. The more probable is that the optics are defective. These can be replaced, but the cost is likely to exceed what you wish to spend. At this point check for replacement alternatives.

My teac recorder model # cd-rw890 keeps flashing "reading" and will not let me operate the cd drive

How long have you had you CD recorder?
How many CDs have you burned on it?
The reason for asking is, it sounds like the laser has
failed or is failing to the point of not recognizing the
presence of a disc in the tray. Does it do this with any
disc you put in the tray. Blanks & pre recorded CDs?
A minimum amount of light must bounce back from the
surface of the disc or the unit thinks the tray is empty.
If the laser has become very weak (or died) the player
doen't know any better and thinks "no disc".
The "reading" message just indicates it hasn't passed
the stage where it has detected a disc, yet.
The first step is to run a laser cleaning disc in the player
on the off-chance the lens is dusty and that's the problem.
If you don't have one (you should) they're cheap enough
and available everywhere. If cleaning doesn't help, you
will be looking for a new laser assembly for your unit.
Be careful how much you pay for one. New 890s can be
had from Full Compass for under $200.00 and would be
a smarter move than repairing a tired one!

Have a hmx 750 compact hi fi cd player just clicks doesn't play cd's

The clicking is the lens assembly attempting to focus on the CD. If you can get to the optics assembly, clean the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. The accumulation of dust or dirt can cause this. Try that and update this if it fails to resolve the problem.

I think that we can get at least one of them going again :)
I suggest
  1. take the lids off both of them.
  2. load up some Cd's and close the drawer and watch what happens.
  3. does the disc begin to spin, is not, do you hear any noise as it tries to read each disc.
  4. can you kick start the CD when it first loads(clockwise direction)
  5. if not of these things happen, can you see if the transport loads the cd up off the tray.
While you are in there, with the front drawer open you should be able to see the laser lens. Use a cotton bud moistened with windex(glass cleaner) gently clean the lens in a circular motion and then also polish it with a dry one to be sure you have left no smears on the lens. Then.... try the unit again and see if the CD reads.
If you don't have any luck this far, please post back to me and we can try some other things. All this and you give me a FixYa... YAY :)

My hi-fi refuses to play CDs! it comes up with a 'no disc' error when there really is a disc there.

The "no disc" error message indicates that the unit failed to read the disc. There can be a number of reasons for this. Try opening up the unit and cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. Many times that cleaning will resolve the problem. If not, please supply the make and model of the unit and I'll provide additional options.
