Question about SimpleTech Signature Mini 160GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Dark Blue Blueberry

Open Question

My SimpleTech Signature Mini will not format to work with my mac

I got a SimpleTech Signature Mini 160GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive, and unfortunately, my computer cannot format it to run for Mac use. I followed the steps on the quick start guide, but when I get to the Disk Utilities page, the 'drop down menu' that it lists (which I assume is under the Erase option) will not allow me to alter the hard drive in any way, and I don't see any other option available to me. I checked the information and currently it says 'unwritable'.
I already downloaded the Fabrik backup program directly from the hard drive, but I don't think that that is the problem. If anybody knows how to fix this problem so I can actually save/transfer files directly onto my external hard drive, I'd appreciate it very much.

Same thing is happening for me. I select "MacOS X Extended" and hit erase, but it doesn't work.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: My simpletech signature driver 320 is not recognized by my PC

I had the same type of problem and found when I took the cover off that the harddrive worked loose from the plug. Pushed back into socket and reassembled, works great.

SOURCE: mac not allwoing write permission to an external hard drive

As long as the Esternal is formatted correctly it should work fine, it might be that you computer wont read the hard-drive, not the files.

Hello,

Blah, stupid question about this folder, of course you can't.
If you have such possibility. The easiest sollution and almost guarantee it will work.

Copy all files from this ext HDD on your local pc and just format this HDD using windows formatting tool (right click on this HDD in my computer -> Format...)

pick NTFS of course

Cheers,
Mike

My simpletech drive is showing on my iMac but I am unable to write any files to it. It says I can only "read" but it does not alow me to change the access.

These things come formatted for PCs--you have to go into Utilities on your mac (in hard drive click on Applications, Utilities folder, then Disk Utility, then click on the simpletech (that has the gb next to it), click on the drop down to change the format (MS-DOS if you want to read on both PCs and MAC, but MAC-OS for just Macs) re-name it on the drop down below that, then click on erase and then it's re-formatted.

I plug my Simpletech Signature Mini hard drive in but than I don't know what to do from there.

When you plug the drive in, Windows should recognize it and make it immediately available for your use.

To confirm this, click Start then Computer and it should show up as a device with removable storage. If you click on the Signature drive, you will see the contents of the drive and you can use it just as ou would your "C:" drive.

Where can I find a Mac driver from a Simpletech 250gb Marshmallow It has been formatted on a PC. I now want to reformat it and use it on my Powerbook G4 OS 10.4.7

You shouldn't need a special driver, but you do need to plug in the usb y cable to 2 usb ports. Normally 1 usb port doesn't supply enough power to make external USB drives go. That is why I prefer firewire, it supplies much more power at higher sustained rates. Once the drive is going just open the Disk Utility and format for your needs. If you need to share files with a PC, partition as MS-DOS (FAT). If you are sharing with a mac or not using the drive on other computers, format as extended with journaling.

External HD not recognizing USB ports as being Hi-speed ports

I have the same issue. I have 4 Simpletech Signature 250GB drives. They all worked fine at first. After about six months two of them started connecting at USB 1 speeds. It occurs on 4 different computers!!! The post about it being the computer assumes is wrong. How can it work fine for six months and then suddenly change. Also it occurs on different computers. I have submitted a tech support request with simpletech and will post the results.
