Spilled water on Dell Inspiron 600m

I spilled water on a Dell Inspiron 600m; took it apart and dryed it out with a hair dryer on cool. It turns on and Windows starts up, but the screen is almost completely black. In the right light I can make out my background, and icons, but it is EXTEMELY faint. What to do?

Wow that was in minutes! Thank you. I think I will go the inverter route first and try it myself.

It sounds like the backlight burned out on the LCD. There is a possibility that it's the inverter which the screen plugs into. That is an inexpensive part to replace. If it's the backlight, then you'll need a new LCD.

You're welcome; the inverter should be just below the power button board which will have to be removed. Good luck! And please take a moment to rate this solution fixya as well. Thanks!

When you experience this problem it's usually one of these four hardware components.

inverter
video card
backlight
video cable

The only thing you can do is replace each item until you find the one that is causing the dimness.

I'd recommend getting it repaired through a local repair shop. Stay away from the Geek Squad.

Or you can go the d.i.y. route and buy the inverter from ebay for about $10-15. Problem is you'll have to install it, it's not hard but you'll have to put aside about 20-30 minutes to do it.

Hopefully this info helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best of luck!

antiochpc is incorrect. It's below the lcd in the top display.

If you ask for a Dell Service manual on this website someone can probably dig one up for you. You should do this anyways so you know what you're up against. It's usually just 5 screws total so it's pretty easy to do yourself.

How do i know if a motherboard is burned out after a liquid spill

Spill on key board and now the letters are not typing

If you spilled water then shut off the laptop NOW and let it dry out for about 3 days. If you spilled soda or juice then you will probably need to have the keyboard replace. Hopefully the liquid did not get to the motherboard or then you might have to have that replaced also.

Water spilled into my laptop Dell Latitude D600. what do i do

  1. Disconnect any power and remove the battery
  2. Tilt the system in various angles to drain as much of the water from the system as possible.
  3. Let the system dry for several days, (I'd say a minimum of 4) is a relatively warm place
  4. Insert Battery, see if system will power on.
If the system was powered on when the spill occurred and turned off by itself during the spill, then the motherboard has most likely been damaged and will need replacement. ($100 or so on EBay)
If the system will not power on after drying, you might consider replacement rather than repair as the cost of fixing it could exceed the replacement cost. (Dell has portables starting around $399)

I have a dell insipron 1545 and got water spilled on it and the '' b,n,spacebar,-,=,?,left and down arrow keys wont work. is there anything i can do to fix it?

Disconnect the battery and a/c plug. Use a hair dryer on the keyboard for a while to try and dry it out. It may take a couple of days to dry out. If it continues to have problems your laptop may need a new keyboard or motherboard.

Laptop keyboard not operational

If you replaced the keyboard with a Dell replacement 1501 keyboard and it still doesn’t work then yes the motherboard will probably have to be replaced. If your son spilled water on the laptop it could clear up after it completely dries. If it was juice, soft drink or sport drink the laptop could develop other issues. The syrup in these kinds of drinks don’t evaporate, they just remain there and accumulate foreign particles like dust, hair, dirt and eventually start to corrode electrical contacts like acid. Similar to the terminal posts on a car battery.

Got spilled by water

Uh, oh, sounds bad, probably didn't get all the water. Also, you really have to open things up and let dry for several days(I leave things dry for a week, before attempting to power up). Open it again, do it quickly, I've never used a hair drier before, hum, I'd just leave it opened up(as long as it was just water that is). You need to get it opened up as completely as you can. Just try not to get impatient with it.
