Spilled water on Dell Inspiron 600m

I spilled water on a Dell Inspiron 600m; took it apart and dryed it out with a hair dryer on cool. It turns on and Windows starts up, but the screen is almost completely black. In the right light I can make out my background, and icons, but it is EXTEMELY faint. What to do?

Wow that was in minutes! Thank you. I think I will go the inverter route first and try it myself.

It sounds like the backlight burned out on the LCD. There is a possibility that it's the inverter which the screen plugs into. That is an inexpensive part to replace. If it's the backlight, then you'll need a new LCD.

You're welcome; the inverter should be just below the power button board which will have to be removed. Good luck! And please take a moment to rate this solution fixya as well. Thanks!

When you experience this problem it's usually one of these four hardware components.

inverter
video card
backlight
video cable

The only thing you can do is replace each item until you find the one that is causing the dimness.

I'd recommend getting it repaired through a local repair shop. Stay away from the Geek Squad.

Or you can go the d.i.y. route and buy the inverter from ebay for about $10-15. Problem is you'll have to install it, it's not hard but you'll have to put aside about 20-30 minutes to do it.

Hopefully this info helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best of luck!

antiochpc is incorrect. It's below the lcd in the top display.

If you ask for a Dell Service manual on this website someone can probably dig one up for you. You should do this anyways so you know what you're up against. It's usually just 5 screws total so it's pretty easy to do yourself.

Water spilled on the display

Not sure exactly what happened but I do know if anything wet spills on anything electronic... computer, tv, cell/mobile phone etc, I've gotten them all to work by pulling panels apart(when possible) and letting dry out and sometimes drying it with a hair dryer. Item should be left out to dry for quite a few days. Do not do this with any current hooked up.

After my daughter spilled water on the keyboad the laptop won't turn on. any ideas? thanks ely

you could try drying the laptop keyboard using a hair dryer or use a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure there is no MOISTURE in the airlines make sure you have the battery disconnected when you dry it out and clean the terminals before you plug it back in
(dont get it to hot if you use a hair dryer do it a few times and let it cool down before drying it again)
hope this helps

I spilled some water on my tv and now the sound is broken

Turn the TV off imediately. Remove the back cover and heat up the wet area with an hair dryer to thoroughly dry the board. Then try tv again. If it doesnt solve the problem look for the board that the speaker wires connect to and replace that board..You should be able to buy online.

Laptop keyboard not operational

If you replaced the keyboard with a Dell replacement 1501 keyboard and it still doesn’t work then yes the motherboard will probably have to be replaced. If your son spilled water on the laptop it could clear up after it completely dries. If it was juice, soft drink or sport drink the laptop could develop other issues. The syrup in these kinds of drinks don’t evaporate, they just remain there and accumulate foreign particles like dust, hair, dirt and eventually start to corrode electrical contacts like acid. Similar to the terminal posts on a car battery.

Partial keyboard doesn't work.

Try blowing on it with canned air or a hair dryer. Other than that keyboards are cheap and easy to replace. Good luck!
