Fostex mr16 crashed

My mr16 HD/CD crashed when I disconnected it from my PC. I had it in USB mode, and when I pressed "stop" to exit USB mode, it froze with the display: "please wait". Well, I waited an hour or so, and nothing. No buttons would work, including the power button. I finally had to unpug it to shut it down. Now, it wil turn on but thats it. No function of any buttons, even the power. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it, and when it's on, it just displays "08/02/12 V1.05" What can I do?

SOURCE: I have freestanding Series 8 dishwasher. Lately during the filling cycle water hammer is occurring. How can this be resolved

A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

I can only hear static through the headphones on my Fostex MR16. The recording sounds fine when I transfer to computer, but I can't hear myself playing.

They make headphone amps that will take a line level and boost it in volume until it can drive headphones. I'd get one of those, and plug it into any available "line out" or "rec out" on the back of your Fostex. Sounds like the D/A converter section that feeds the headphone output has gone bad, and my solution will get you around that.

My MR16 says HDD full- so I erased 12 songs and 10 wav files to free up space. No matter how much i erase it still says HDD full when i attempt to record. do i have to initialize and lose everything to...

I had the same problem. After some reasarch I found out that even if you erase a song the data is still on the recorder in "hidden files".

What you have to do is download the WAV manager software from, then copy all your files to your PC, reformat the hardrive on the Fostex, and copy the song files back on to the Fostex form your PC.

I know it's a pain in the ****, but I guess that's one reason this thing was so inexpensive.
I still am very happy with mine, but after 3 years of constant use in my case, some type of maintenence can be expected to happen.

How do you check firmware version or update the firmware on the MR8 MKii? I have the .mot file from the website but it comes with no instructions.

GO to USB, set Card Protect=Off

Then start up USB Device Mode

The Fostex will come up as an external drive. Copy the .MOT file over to the root directory (where all the folders for your songs are).

Using Windoze' Safely Remove, (or Mac's Eject) disconnect the Fostex from the computer.

Disconnect the MR-8 from the USB cord.

Now hold down the STOP key and press Enter at the same time. This will cause a new option, the Service Menu, to appear. Click Enter, scroll on down to Version Up. Hit Enter again, and you'll see your file (MR8MV105.MOT in my case). Click Enter again, and it will ask you to confirm. Follow the instructions; press both RECORD and ENTER at the same time to continue.

Then you'll see File Loading, then Flash ROM erasing, then Flash ROM writing, then Completed, please hit STOP key. Then turn it off at the switch, and back on.

Assuming all went well, when you hold down the STOP and press ENTER, the Service Mode will come up again. Press ENTER, then press ENTER again (for Version) and confirm.

My Fostex mr8 hdd "full"

If you can reformat the drive after dumping out anything you want saved MIGHT fix the problem...

The unit MAY not be able to tolerate fragmenting when you delete a snippet here and there... It may require large blocks of contiguous space.

Fostex mr16 eq/presets

In short - No. The Eq menu is the only way to affect the frequency levels on the inputs, but if you select stereo buss and listen to the inputs, you can hear the effect of each Eq on the relevant input.
