Tascam us-144 no sound with Windows Vista

I'm trying to use my Tascam us-144 with a new pc. Pretty high end pc with 4gb of ram 2.26 proc. speed but when I plug it in my usb on the computer and try to run another audio program like itunes I get a popping and clicking noise then no noise at all. Even when I try to run Cubase I get no sound. I've done all the drive updates and changed the settings in cubase to recognize the Tascam but I still get the problem. I am using a 64bit version of Vista but the Driver updates supposedly fixed the previous incompatibility problems. Someone Please help

This is indeed frustrating. I updated my computer and run cubase 5 studio on a Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz with a 7200 rpm hardisk. Cubase runs super without click or hickups, but the US144 can't handle this. I also updated firmware and drivers (1.12). It ran and still does run perfectly on my 32 bit laptop.

i also have a 64 bit vista installation and on here my us 144 wont run. when i open cubase or other applications that use the drivers (newest most updated), it crashed at start up. my whole computer is running significantly slower with the driver installed.

if i unplug the thing and open cubase or other apps, no problem, but crashed as soon as I plug it in

    wtf is going on?

and i live in denmark (europe), so there is no customer support for me. not even a contact email. WHAT THE ****!

Often, you just need to ensure that your computer's native driver is disabled, this is a common problem with audio interfaces and windows. Once this is done, make sure that your Tascam is set as both the input as well as the output device for all audio-based programs. If this doesn't work, get an M-Audio . . .
Hope this helps!

MY PC wont recognize my Tascam Portastudio device2488, i have Vista

Tascam 2488:
I use Vista and my 2488 MK1.

When you plug in the USB cable from the 2488 into your Vista PC, Vista will always say 'not recognised'.
You do not need any PC drivers for the 2488. On the Tascam 2488, go to 'Menu', then 'Disk', then 'USB Open/Close', then click 'Yes'.
On your PC the 2488 will appear as a new hard drive in the 'Computer' folder, called HDR2488.
You'll see three folders in there: WAVE, SMF and BACKUP.
Use the WAVE folder to import and export WAV files, the SMF folder to import midi files to the 2488, and the BACKUP folder is where you can import and export Backup files to and from the 2488.
Hope this helps!

TRANSFERING OLD TRACKS TO THE NEW TASCAM 2488-NEO

You'll need your PC as the intermediary. You'll have to do a USB export of the tracks you want from the DP01 to your PC and then connect the 2488's USB to the PC and do a USB import of those tracks into new tracks on the 2488.

Page 40 of the DP01FX manual will explain using the USB connection and page 43 details the steps for performing a USB export.

In the 2488 NEO manual refer to pages 80 and 81 for using the USB connection and importing the tracks.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Making Midi Files for Importing to Tascam 2488

Hi,

You should always work in wav format if possible because there is a loss of quality with mp3 which is a compression format in which bits are lost in order to compress the file size.

There are a number of wav editors available which will allow you to load a stereo wav and then save it as a mono wav. The free one I use is called Audacity.

When working with FL or Reason I will sometimes import files to the Tascam, or I will take the outputs from my PCs sound card and line them into the tacams inputs and record them live. I only tend to do this with programs (like synths) where I am using an external midi keyboard and can play live what I want to record.

With basic drum pattern tracks I'll usually create them on the PC, save as wav, convert to mono, and then import to a track on the Tascam.

hope this helps.

Is there a way to upgrade the tone generator sounds drums, synths, etc?

No. Unfortunately you are stuck with the drum kits and standard midi that come with the 2488. I find the tone generator sounds to be pretty good on the 2488 quality-wise at least. Of course having the versatility of swapping in other kits and tones/samples would be nice. I believe Tascam discontinued the tone generator/drum machine on subsequent models of 2488 because it seems that the demand wasn't there.
