Question about John Deere Riding Mowers & Garden Tractors
I can cut for about 10-15 mins. and the engine starts to spit and sputter. If i disengage the blades the it starts to run smooth again for a min. or so then shuts off.
I had the same problem on my craftsman 18.5 hp, the problem was in the choke, the spring was broken, and the choke was not free, replaced the spring and it is fine now. Check it out. Good luck.

I would agree with the gas cap being the problem. There should be a insert inside the cap which helps with the tap pressure. If this is lost then the engine will run for a few min. and shut off.
There is one other thing and that is the float in the carb bowl. It may be allowing in just enough gas to fill the bowl and then it is sticking. This would account for just enough fuel to run for a brief period and then shut down.
