sound like a safteyfeature somewere is going bad, does it have a saftey shut off on the seat? try jumping it

if not a safety switch (as mentioned by josh1111), then i would look at overheating. check to see if the spark plug is the correct one for this mower. if its the wrong heat range, then it will act like this.

if the right plug, then you may have contaminants in the fuel system (gas tank, filter or carb) that might be obstructing a fuel line or carb jet. may require removing the carb float bowl and see if there is rust in there. i have had this on my craftsman lawn tractor to the point where the rust caused a hole in the carb bowl.

I had the same problem on my craftsman 18.5 hp, the problem was in the choke, the spring was broken, and the choke was not free, replaced the spring and it is fine now. Check it out. Good luck.

I would agree with the gas cap being the problem. There should be a insert inside the cap which helps with the tap pressure. If this is lost then the engine will run for a few min. and shut off.
There is one other thing and that is the float in the carb bowl. It may be allowing in just enough gas to fill the bowl and then it is sticking. This would account for just enough fuel to run for a brief period and then shut down.

I have a 17.5 Murray riding lawn mower engine runs well when I engage the blades it spits and sputters and starts backfiring what could be the problem

Sounds like bad fuel....runs fine when not under stress but poops out under pressure. Drain fuel and refill with new mix if it's a 50/50 gas-oil blend.

While I was cutting grass the Engine shut down. Pulled the brake up. Push the PTO back down to shut the blades down. I started the engine, engine runs perfect.

try replacing the battery most with an electric clutch PTO have to have a really strong battery as the alternator system is not strong enough by itself

Zero turn mower is sputtering and dies

Check everything is clean. Check the air filter is clean, check that the engine cooling fan, cutting blades and cutting deck are free of grass. Check all the drive belt pulleys to ensure accumulated grass is not jamming anything. Check the fuel filler cap is clean and the breather hole works.

I have a Kraftsman 91.5 42 inch cut model #

Safety switch at seat or reverse. Mower will cut of when blades are engaged if you get off the seat or put into reverse. Check these switches for stuck on, damaged, disconnected, or just plain broke. Good luck.

Sputtering Mower

It might not be disengaging the mower deck all the way off. I had this problem on an older model.

Spitting and sputtering

mine did the same, I found out that the high speed jet was clogged, I pulled the fuel line off the filtor(going to the carb), stuck the line into a mixture of half gas half carb cleaner, I fanned it up and in 2 or 3 minutes it started running well, hope this helps.

Stalls when engage blades in forward, but cuts fine in reverse

Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver
