IBM ThinkPad R40 No PowerUp

I got a IBM ThinkPad R40 off ebay. The laptop looks almost new accept for a crack on the front of the touchPad on the palmrest and missing the screws to hold the laptop together. I own a IBM ThinkPad T40 and bought the R40 just for games. I used the T40 AC Adapter on the R40 and press the power button and no power on, no fan or lights. The laptop is missing the CD Drive, Battery, AC, RAM ,Hard Drive cover and built-In WiFi adapter card. I fixed a IBM ThinkPad R31 along time ago with the same problem, I don't know if its because it don't have RAM in it or not. Some laptops will not turn on without RAM. Unfortantly I don't have any DDR RAM laying around only the old types like DIMM for the T20 series. So can't test RAM thought.

Does anyone know if it could be the AC Jack its self? I left it on the AC Adapter for a hour now and its just hot in the corner where the AC Plugs in, basically on the side where it says R40 on the bottom of screen. The AC Jack is connected to the motherboard, I removed the keyboard and seen that it is, unlike the T40 I can change the jack and replace it. its removable on the T40 series but not on the R40. I'm just going to leave on the AC for tonight and see about tomorrow if it will power on. My old ThinkPad 380Z didn't power on at first from not being on or in use and left on AC and it powered on the next day and now works fine. So I don't know when this R40 was last used.

Well I powered my R40 up today and my theory worked again like my ThinkPad 380Z, It powered up and the circle with the Z in it lit up and the fan ran and did a beep sound sequence like the T20 I had before meaning it doesn't have RAM. So it works now. Just got to get RAM for it for the display to come on. I don't know why the display never comes on without RAM. Same as the Previous T20 I owned before, no display with RAM.

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.

I have the 380z and the display quit. It lights up with streaks buts thats it. well it has a spot for an external monitor so i plugged one in. System does boot up and works for with an external monitor. If you indeed think you have a ram problem try this step first,it just might be your display!!!

My R40 Thinkpad loses the system date & time after being shut down for a while. However it does not lose it if only shut down for a few minutes. Any ideas please?

you need to change your cmos cell on motherbord circuit for that open back side cover and then you can see cmos cell on motherbord circuit.Change it pur chase new cmos cell.
Your old cmos cell has not enough waltage so your bios settings are not saved when you turn off the power.
