Question about HP LaserJet 4 plus Printer

HP LaserJet 4 Printer stopped printing

Our reliable HP LJ 4 printer stopped printing a few days ago. It is connected by a parallel cable. The printer's display all looks normal with the online and ready lights lit and the display reading 00 READY. When I send a print job to it (even a test page) the document appears in the cue and seems to be processed fine. While the doc is in the cue, the green ready light on the printer flashes like it is supposed to when it is receiving data. Then the doc disappears from the cue as if it has been printed and the Green light on the printer stops flashing as if it finished printing the document but nothing has happened. It's just waiting for another print job.
If I use the printer's keypad, I can have it print out a self test sheet without any problem but anything coming from the computer looks like it's being received but nothing prints.
I'd apprecate any help I can get.
Thanks

There is plenty of paper in both tray 1 and the manual paper tray. It prints self test pages fine from both trays.

It looks like when the Green light starts flashing after I've added a doc to the cue, the Form Feed light also comes on and stays on. When I push the On Line button to make it offline and push the Form Feed button, a single line of seemingly randon ASCI characters gets printed. Then the Form Feed light goes off.

    Any other ideas?

It turned out to be the data cable. It looked like it was passing the data to the printer so I didn't think that was the problem. But before I tried to replace it, I wanted to exhaust everything I could think of and after I switched the data cable, it worked like a champ.

I hope this helps someone else.

Hp lj 4 plus accepts print job but does not print Vista Home Premium

Hello charles lewis,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

To answer your question: What you are experiencing is a driver type miss-match. The printer cannot understand the driver language that Vista is providing. Even though it is labeled as HP LaserJet 4 Plus.

I recommend trying the plain HP LaserJet 4 drivers or Lexmark Optra drivers. They may speak the language the printer likes, through Vista. If that does not work; it is time to purchase or use a newer printer.

Have a great day!

49 ff95 service error for hp 5200n LJ

A critical firmware error has occurred that caused the processor on the formatter to abort operation. This type of error can be caused by invalid print commands, corrupt data, or invalid operations. In some cases, electrical noise in the cable can corrupt data during transmission to the printer. Other
causes include poor-quality parallel cable, poor connections, or home-grown programs.

1. Turn the printer off and then on.
2. Press Stop to clear all print jobs from the printer memory.
3. Turn the printer off and then on.
4. Try printing a job using a different software program. If the job prints, try using the original software program to print a different job.
NOTE If the error message only appears when using certain software programs, contact the software program vendor for assistance.
5. If the message persists with different
software programs and print jobs, disconnect all of the cables and turn the printer off.
6. If the error persists, perform a firmware upgrade.
7. Remove all DIMMs, EIO devices, and CompactFlash solutions.
8. Remove all EIO devices.
9. Turn the printer on.
10. If the error does not persist, reinstall the DIMMs, EIO devices, and CompactFlash one at a time.
NOTE You must turn the printer off and then on when reinstalling each component.
11. Replace the DIMM, EIO device, or CompactFlash if necessary.
12. Reconnect all of the cables.

My printer hp laserjet 4350n is not printing because it shows or display 49. ff04 service error

A critical firmware error has occurred that
caused the processor on the formatter to
abort the operation.
This type of error can be caused by invalid
print commands, corrupt data, or invalid
operations.
In some instances, electrical noise in the
cable can corrupt data during transmission
to the printer. Other causes include poorquality
parallel cables, poor connections, or
specific software programs.
Sometimes, the formatter itself is at fault,
which is usually indicated by a 79 Service
Error.

Recommended action Hp Service Manual
1 Press CANCEL JOB to clear the print job
from the printer memory.
2 Turn the printer off and then on.
3 Go to www.hp.com/go/lj4350_software.
Select Download Drivers and
Software. Check for the latest firmware
image version at the bottom of the
page. If this firmware image is newer
than the one installed on the printer
and the printer can receive a firmware
update, download the newer firmware
upgrade.
4 Try printing a job from a different
software program. If the job prints, go
back to the first program and try
printing a different file. If the message
appears only with a certain software
program or print job, contact the
software vendor for assistance.
5 If the message persists when using
different software programs and
attempting specific print jobs,
disconnect all cables that connect the
printer to the network or a computer.
6 Turn the printer off.
7 Remove all memory DIMMs or thirdparty
DIMMs from the printer. (Do not
remove the firmware DIMM in slot J1.)
See Firmware DIMM (LJ 4200/4300
only).
8 Remove all of the EIO devices from the
printer.

Have just bought a new desktop with Win7 and a usb to parallel cable to connect to the LJ 5L, I installed but it wont print. any ideas as to what the solution is? Could it be the cable or is Win7...

Your printer supports W7 and the driver is located below. You need to first unplug the printer, uninstall it from the control panel and then restart the computer. Then download your driver and install it. HP printers need the Full Version software, not the just the driver that W7 loads when it discovers it.

Do NOT plug the printer back into the computer until prompted by the software.

Laserjet 4 printer will not print

You need to go through a hub or use a crossover cable.

A centronics /parralel cable would be a lot easier.

Want to connect to my computer

What connector/interface does your PC has
9-pin or 25-pin connector

If it has 9-pin connector: use the following:
DB-9 RS-232 Serial Connection
or
DB-25 RS-232 Serial Connection

If it has 25-pin connector: use the following:
DB-25 Serial Connection
or
DB-25 RS-232 Serial Connection

If you are configuring the computer to use an RS-422A serial port, you need a special cable. Contact the computer or printer network manufacturer to see if an RS-422A cable is available. If no cable is available, contact your computer manufacturer for your computer pin assignments and have a cable constructed.

The default configuration for the serial port on the printer is for RS-232C serial communication. To set the printer to use RS-422A serial communication, change the control panel Serial Menu’s SERIAL setting to SERIAL=RS-422.

Can't print to old applications

The issue your having is with the Operating system compatability. The HP 3055 is compatible with 98, ME, XP, Window 2000 and forward. It won't do windows 3.1 or 95 well even if your computer will, the disconnect comes when the software is sending old print commands to a new style print driver.

Your best hope is to download and install the HP Printdriver for Windows 98 and try it as it's the most tolerant of old gear. Download the PCL 5 as the PCL6 is too new and probably not going to work.

As an alternate try to download each of the printdrivers for the differnt era windows and try them. It's a hard problem that may not have a solution other than upgrading the accounting software.

If it's simply a connection problem, they do make a USB to Parallel addaptor which may help you with the physical connection issue.

Hope that helps you.

HP Color LaserJet 2600n Print Queue failure

Sounds like low toner to me. If the printer is connected by USB or parallel cable to one computer, go to that one. Click start-programs-HewlettPackard-HPlaserjet utility. The utility should let you see how much of each toner color remains.
