My 3 year old Averatec 3300 laptop running Windows XP keeps resarting itself for no reason over the past 3-4 months. It now does so fairly frequently.
a) how do I stop this from happening?
b) I have tried to restore the laptop to August 2008, but when I try to restore it only lets me go back to november 2008 - how do I go back further?
thanks!!
A couple of suggestions...
First off you might have a hadware getting ready to fail. Follow this link it might be helpful

Second, it might be you have a virus. If so try booting into safe mode run cntrl+alt+del and look for files in caps (especially LSASS.exe and WINLOGON.exe) if these files are corrupted then you might want to start backing up your data and reinstalling the OS. Otherwise run a virus scanner like xoftspy to check for viruses.
Lastly in XP, for system restore to work you needed to make periodical check points so it is correct if the last restore point was August 2008.
The only other thing I can think of is going into bios and seeing if the computer reboots itself. This would probably eliminate any virus and point out a harware failure.
