Replace DVD Drive in a Sony Vaio PCG-K23

Bought a new DVD drive for my notebook. Thought I could replace it by removing two screws on the bottom of the notebook. What else do I need to do?

...the old DVD drive wont pull out. I cannot see anything holding it in place. The screws are out. Do I really need to take this whole laptop apart to replace something as simple as this?

NOTE: This previous post on FixYa says pretty much what you say - two screws and out.

If you open the dvd drive and use the tray as leverage to pull the unit out you may not have to open everything up but if you do have to open the case here is a really good graphical instruction on how to gain access to the DVD drive for removal (you should be able to accomplish the task by step 7).

Just an addition to my previous...

Forced removal of the drive if it isn't budging is probably best done from the inside of the unit just so you can get a look at what's impeding it. The guide I linked to previously is probably the best demo I've seen for your model. Read through some of the comments below the article also so you can see what others experienced with the procedures described.

Cleaning up the fan(s) while you're under there isn't a bad plan either.

Let me know how it turns out.

Hi, own a Sony Vaio VGN P530H with hardisk Toshiba MK6028GAL damaged. as forced to replace unit, wonder could install a higher capacity? Brand & model if available please!!! thanks to all of you!!!

The VAIO VGN-T350 is a notebook computer designed and distributed by Sony.
The hard drive on your Sony VAIO VGN-T350, which is the unit that stores data, consists of many clusters of data that can be rewritten with new data.
If you are looking for a memory capacity upgrade, or if your old hard drive is having errors, it's time for an upgrade.
Upgrading the hard drive on your Sony VAIO will require the use of a screwdriver and will take you about 30 minutes to complete.

Turn off your Sony VAIO VGN-T350 and remove the power cord and any other peripheral components.
Turn over your Sony VAIO VGN-T350 and locate the hard drive chamber on the bottom of your laptop. It will be clearly labeled.

Use the screwdriver to remove the screw holding the lid in place.
Gently lift the hard drive and its cage away from your laptop and disconnect the data cord.
Remove the four screws located at the corners, and then remove your old hard drive from its cage.
Place your new internal laptop hard drive into the cage and replace the screws.
Connect the data cord to your new hard drive and place your new hard drive into its chamber.
Close the lid and replace the screw to complete the operation.

My sony vaio freezes at the sony screen during boot

Most likely a hard drive problem but could be a number of things. Try pressing tab or escape when it freezes and see if the screen switches and gives more information. If you are able, remove the hard drive and try booting again. (the cd/dvd drive could also cause this so try removing that if possible)

Call sony, the disk is 12 bucks. I had this problem after my hard drive crashed. Be careful though, because I replaced the hard drive and it would not recognize the disk after that. Sony wanted me to pay 100 dollars to fix it.

If you were instructed by Tech Support to upgrade the BIOS, then they should have provided information on how to obtain it.

Sony PCG-951A DVD Drive

Yes, the drive is removable, and there is only one little screw on the bottom side of the computer that holds it in. Remove the screw, and you will be able to pull the drive out of the bay. There is no lock.

The hard drive is hidden inside, and you have to take the palm rest off to get to it. Take the srews at the bottom out, take the keyboard off and replace the screws underneath. then pry off the palm rest. There are Laptop Repair Guides that show how to open a Laptop. Watch out for the ribbon cables, those tear easily. Replacement parts are usually available on Ebay. There are third party services that can do it for you, like Sony Repair NYC.

Replacement

There should be a small screw or screws on the bottom near the drive. You should be able to slide the drive assembly out once these are removed. Replace with a compatible drive and reinsert the screws. Boot up and install any needed drivers for the new drive. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.
