Question about Gateway MX6438 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a gateway MX6438 with a persistent DC jack problem. I had the notebook repaired and it started smoking on me not once but 4 times now. I've been told to replace the motherboard, but I'm hoping that there is a less expensive way to fix this computer, I like the features and don't want to give it up. Any suggestions? I can be reached at Charles B.

There's nothing cheaper than fixing the dc jack again, but if it's smoking it sounds like a sinking ship.

Motherboard swap is gonna be the only way out of this mess unfortunately.

Sounds like your power jack may be faulty or bad connection to motherboard unfortunately. The only way to truly find out is by disassembling the laptop. You'll have to do this at your own risk of course, and test the terminals at the power jack to see if you are getting power through them, if you are, then the trouble is deeper in the motherboard. If you are not, then here is a good article on how to fix the power jack:

Good luck.

No connection with the DC Jack on Gateway 3550GZ

It's time to take the computer to a qualified technician, for proper trouble-shooting & repair, because there are very-few "user-repairable" parts inside a laptop/notebook computer.

Gateway m460 wont power up and battery wont charge!

From the information you provided it sounds like a bad DC jack, first check your power adapter with a volt meter if you have one accessible. If your power adapter is outputting the proper voltage, then within a 95% certainty its your dc jack. You can look at this website here for more info on dc jack repair, if you dont have the proper tools to fix it.

To fix it yourself you would have to take the laptop apart and remove the motherboard.

Repair costs could run you $50 and up depending where you take it.
