Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

When you open door, it goes up fine, but when it gets to the top, it doesn't stop at the normal spot, then it disengages and the door releases and comes crashing down. Then you have to reengage it, in order for it do work again. So, now I have to hit the button again to make it stop just before it disengages at the top. What is the adjustment or is there a "stopper" at the top that has come loose and moved, that makes the door stop at the appropriate place?

You have a couple of problems. First if the door comes crashing down, it is not properly balanced. The door should stay in the up position by itsself. Next, the limit settings are off. there are two white screws on the side of the opener. Adjust the screw labeled up. Turn it one full revolution "less" and try the opener without the door enguaged. Continue to adjust if necessary. If this does not work, take off the cover and look at the white nylon gear and see if it stripped. There will be white shavings in the bottom of the cover. If it is replace with a "liftmaster gear and sprocket assembly". Issue two is door balance. Raise the door manually. At each hinge point (the roller is in the radius part of the track) the door should hold itsself up. If it does not, your springs need to be adjusted or replaced. Most springs are designed for 10,000 cycles so if they are over 8-10 years old, they are ready to be replaced if you use your door regularly. I dont reccomend adjusting the springs yourself. It is exteremly dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. I hope this helps.

Cannot open my garage door manually after I disengage it from the garage door opener (chain drive)

They are not light weight but there is no reason if the motor can raise it, then you cannot raise it by hand.

Release the garage door from the opener and open the door by hand, if it is vey heavy you may have a broke spring inside the torsion bar above the header, check then to see if the opener goes through the complete cycle O K with the door not attached. If you don't have a broken spring you may need to increase the up force on the opener head.

I have a craftsman 3/4 hp 315 mhz garage door opener model 13953990ds when ativating it to open it only moves 6 to 8" forward and back and stop. i have tried all steps in the manual can get it solved

If you've readjusted the opener, and it still isn't working, you need to have a trained door technician come out and adjust the tension on your springs. To determine this, pull the red release handle to disengage the opener from the door, and try to lift your door by hand. You should be able to move the door easily, and it should stay at the half open point without falling or rising. If the door is hard to move, excessively heavy to lift off the ground, or will not stay open, the door itself is the culprit. If the door is fine, the opener will need to be serviced.

Garage door will not open manually or automatically/normally

The color of the sensors is normal and have nothing to do with your problem. If you cannot raise the door manually and it is released from the opener then you have a door problem. If you mean the door won't open and you cannot get into the garage to release the opener then you are going to have to call a door technician for help. He will get in.

My Craftsman garage door opener opens fine. When I try to close it the door starts to close, stops, the light flashes and it goes back up. I replaced the two sensors thinking one must be burned out. Before...

Make sure the sensors are wired correctly. The solid white wire from each sensor goes to terminal #2 and the wires with the black stripe go to terminal #3.

Each of the sensors has a small light that must be on for them to work properly. There is a possibility you could have a bad wire. Check to make sure something like a staple hasn't cut the wire.

1/2 hp craftsman garage door opener won't open when cold

I called Sears garage door customer service number due to the same issue. The test is to disengage the opener drive by pulling the emergency disengage handle, then open the door half way manually and then let it go. If it stays there it is a door/track/lub problem; if it drops down and closes its a garage door opener problem. Mine stayed open half way during this test so it was a door/track/lub problem. After using silicone spray on all tracks, rollers, and springs mine has been working great. Good luck.........
