When I first bought the computer the CD drive worker fine, I could back up my computer to CDs and everything. But then I was trying to install some hp printer software on my computer, because i could not print online web pages... it still did not help, do uninstalled the software with the Installation CD in the drive. The computer froze and when i tried to shut it down i took like a few hours. After it finally finished shutting down i started up the computer and everything was working fine. Then i tried to play a game that uses a CD and it did not work. I searched around online and used the registry edit to fix that problem and now my CD drive runs fine. But I still cannot burn CDs anymore. For backing up my computer or for burning MP3s onto an Audio CD. Can anyone help figure out the problem?
Try rolling back the driver for the drive. maybe the driver was altered during you instal / uninstall of hp software.
rolling back
when you go to the control panel it will have an option called system.
if you go there you can click on a tab called device manager.
from there you can pick any installed hardware and update drivers for it or roll them back to a previous one.
yeah a few more ideas actually.lol. what printer is it? and what hp software did you instal?
the HP software is the issue. it is the same issue that people get with norton and nero. it will not all remove when you uninstall it. i will find you some info on how to remove all of the hp software off your computer then you should be up and running again. i will also look into i-tunes(which i personally dont like cos if messes with your music files). i am not a fan of apple products. the do not run well with windows and use slightly different software patterns to run files. i will post back soon. creative zen is the way forward, if you want to spend the extra cash compared to an ipod.
This route is for extreme issues, wherein repeated uninstall/reinstall
failed. It will completely remove everything and reinstall the software
fresh.
Steps:
a. Download the latest full feature software and driver from HP.com. Downloaded softwares tend to be more reliable compared to discs. Plus, it is updated.
b. Using your CD, explore to contents of your CD and launch the following uninstallation files:x:\Util\CCC\Uninstall-L1
x:\Util\CCC\Uninstall-L2
x:\Util\CCC\Uninstall-L3
Do not run Uninstall-l4, I do not recommend it. It may damage your computer.
Where "X:\" is the drive location of your disc.
- DONT HAVE THE DISC? if you dont have the disc, all you need to
do is double click on the downloaded software to extract its contents.
After extracting, welcome back screen appears. Do not install it yet,
just click on exit. Click on start - run - and type in the box "%temp%"
to go to temp folder. Locate the folder that starts with "7z...". E.G.
"7z6nC"... The content of the "7z..." should be the same with disc's.
c.Go
to Control Panel - Add and Remove Programs (for XP), or Programs and
Features (for Vista). If there is any HP Software related to the AiO,
go ahead and uninstall it.
List of HP softwares that may be removed: note: do not remove anything aside from softwares that belong to this list.
d.HP Imaging Devices Functions
HP AiO Drivers (i.e. HP OfficeJet J4500 Series)
HP Photosmart Essentials
HP Solution Center
HP Image Zone
HP Photo and Imaging Gallery
HP Software Updates
HP Share to Web
HP Director
HP Memory Disk
OCR Software (Optional)
Shop for HP Supplies (Optional)
Delete the HP Folder (or Hewlett Packard if it is an old AiO) located
at C:\Program Files. If it's an HP computer delete only Digital Imaging
folder inside the Hp folder. If you are having an access denied message
restart your computer and try again. If you still cant delete the
folder try renaming it.
e. (This step is Optional.) Check if all the HP Services have been uninstalled, run SERVICES.MSC search for:
IfHP CUE Device Discovery
HP Network Device Support
hpqcxs08
Net Driver HPZ12
PML Driver HPZ12
services are still there running or with an error like stopping, you
may need to remove those manually from the REGEDIT. ( Note: Do not
proceed if you do not know what you are doing, you may render your
computer unusable if not done properly, instead you may skip this step.)
REGISTERS OF HP SERVICES TO ELIMINATE IN ORDER TO PERFORM A FULL UNINSTALL:
Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
Delete the ff if they are present:HPQCXS08
HPSLPSVC (HP Network Device Support)
HPQDD (HP CUE Device Discovery)
f. Restart the computer.Net Driver HPZ12
PML Driver HPZ12
g. Install using the downloaded software.
CAUTION:
Do not remove the Microsoft .NET Framework.
don't worry about the re-installing bit if you do not need hp software.
i got rid of the download files from the instructions cos you only need to remove hp and not install.
you can remove every bit of hp software if you dont need it, just not the net.framework. your pc needs that.
windows media player is good for burning discs. it automatucally converts to real media for proper cd quality when burnt to disc.
if you want the i-tunes files on wmp you will need to convert them to mp3.
i think media player can do that for you, if not nero can.
i am not that up on norton. i just know it is a pain to remove.
i run vista 64 on my pc and the only anti-virus i can use properly is avast.
i am not sure if all the files for i-tunes can be installed to windows?
i know the photo viewers only work on mac.
my brother is a mac whizz and uses i-everything.lol.
i will ask him when i see him and see what he thinks about the i-tunes burning.
are you running a 64bit operating system?
the only time my bro has heard of this happening is because of vista 64 or xp 64.
he said even if tunes put into playlists it would still not burn but on basic xp or vista the very same program would work.
try winamp. thats a good player. sync's with everything.

By the way my computer is a HP Pavilion Notebook. I am not on my laptop right now so i am not sure of the exact series i'll get back to you on that.
the model is: HP G60-120US Notebook PC
what you mean by "rolling back"? I know a little about computer but I am not familiar with that term...
Thanks... I'll try that when I get home and see if it works then I'll get back to you
Ok.... I went to the deviced manager and had it check for updates on my CD/DVD Driver, but they said that it was up to date. The roll back thing is greyed and I cannot click on it. Any other ideas?
the printer is not really the problem, but it is a HP Deskjet 3650 series. and the software was the software that came w/ the printer. it brings up a window that shows ure ink levels, etc. when you print. I think it was meant for a non-HP computer, since I have a HP Laptop I do not think I need it. But after I unistalled the software it caused the cd burning problem. The printer works perfectly w/ out the software, exept when I try to print internet pages. But not printing internet pages has nothing to do w/ my cd burner so we can discuss that later.
The CD/DVD Drive itself reads the blank CD but when I select to burn the music onto the CD or Backup my computer to a disc, it says that a recording device cannot be found. on I-Tunes is says, "disc recording not found.." Maybe this information will help you deside what the problem is.
I don't even have an I-Pod I am just using I-Tunes to listen to my music... it is the only music player that I am familiar w/ and is easy to use to store my music on my computer. I know Windows Media Player stores music on my computer, but I am not familiar w/ WMP and how it works so... I am just sticking w/ I-Tunes for now.
I went into Uninstall or Change programs and there are a few programs that I discovered: HP Print Diagnostic Utility, HP Smart Web Printing. I am nor sure if I should uninstall them or not.
what software you want me to download from hp.com? I missed it.
What about the HP Print Diagnostic Utility (I downloaded that from HP.com to find out why my printer was not printing online documents, it did not help me) and the HP Smart Web Printing?
I just discovered something.... Windows media Player automatically has some songs on it when you get it... so I chose a few of these songs and tried to burn it to a blank CD and it works fine.... i'll try w/ I Tunes again and get back to you.
Ok, i can burn a cd w/ WMP but not with I Tunes. Also, I have Norton Antivirus on my computer and it cannot detect the recording device when I try to backup my computer.... so I think is is just a problem w/ I Tunes and Norton.
I could easily just put all of my CDs on WMP insteas of I Tunes but I have like 25 songs that I bought through I Tunes store. Is there a way I can transfer the songs i bought from I Tunes to WMP, or am I stuck?
Here is the warning that pops up whenever I start up I Tunes:
I tried to reinstall I Tunes like it says but that did not fix it.
I don't use the mac photo viewer. But I Tunes works fine on my brothers computer. He can back up his computer to a CD w/ norton. So, I don't know. He has never burnt a CD w/ I Tunes, but I know that warning does not come on when he starts up I Tunes. so I don't know what the problem is.
By the way my brother has the exact same laptop.
ok...
I am not sure... but I just give up I am uninstalling I-tunes and quicktime and just using WMP for music storage... I'll let you know if WMP starts giving me trouble.
