Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

I just got my PS3, used, and it worked fine when we first turned it on and put in a disc. Then we installed the 2.6 firmware update and it will not play ANY discs. Everything else seems fine (I haven't tried demos, but I mean browser, PS Home, etc.). I have a box coming for me to send it in... I'm quite upset. :/

Thank you for the link/suggestions. I've tried everything I can without taking it apart, so to Sony it goes. :/

  • msktty89 Feb 25, 2009

Dang... Well, I'll send it and see what they say. I've dealt with Sony before, which I really dislike doing. I always ask for my old parts back, which I then later sell to make up a bit of the expense. They haven't given me an issue with that request in the past, but that doesn't mean they won't now. The way I look at it, and what I tell them is, it's my part... I'm paying for the new one, but they're not paying me for the old one, so I want it. :P

Yep it sucks big time. Did you have a disc inside the blu-ray drive when you did the firmware upgrade?

Check out my common PS3 problem and repair guide for tips and suggestions for more details.

p.s. My suggestions PROBABLY won't fix your problem but within a few days I'll be posting a guide on how to repair the problem yourself which should save you about $100.

If you can wait a few days I'll have my tutorial up. Especially since your machine will get a refurb drive put into it. Sony doesn't use new parts (as far as I can tell) when they fix your machine.

    Either way, best of luck.

UPDATE error 8002F147

Try a low format FAT 32 in windows with "HDD Low Format" app. Make sure your downloaded firmware has no CRC errors and put it in the root of your FAT 32 usb stick. Do a System Update from the Safe Mode in your PS3. Following this steps should do just fine. Write back to know how it works.

You might need to update your PS3..

How to Update Your Ps3 Firmware With Your Computer

So you want to update your ps3, but you don't have your ps3 connected to the internet, well no fear in this article I will show you how to update your ps3's firmware by using your computer.

Instructions
Things You'll Need

Internet
J-Drive

1 First go to this website,http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/SystemUpdates/PS3
and click on the download now button just under the big ps3 and save it to your desktop or any other place that you can get to the file easly.

2 Now get into your j-drive and make a new folder named "PS3".

3 Now click on the PS3 folder and make a new one called "UPDATE".

4 Now put the downloaded update file ito the "UPDATE" folder that you just made.

5 Take the j-drive to your ps3 and plug it into the usb port.

6 Once done with that go to settings, system update, update via mass storage device.

7 Follow the directions on the screen to complete the update.

8 Once done you cna go back to playing on your ps3.

Tips & Warnings

You can do this for every update that you do
Its free to do
If it don't work you did it wrong

Or you could try this too

You can try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.

Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).

Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as
well as cookies.

You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.

But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance.

I wish you good luck

For the ps3 I try to play a game but when I put in any disc it says error code 80010514 every time or sometimes it just freezes I tried some things but disentangle work pleas help me ..!!!

It's related to a hard drive issue. Maybe a game installation or a firmware update was not correctly completed. What I suggest you to do is to try re-installing the ps3 firmware updates.
Try this tutorial:

Quantum of solace, on blu ray, previews play fine, film wont

Do need the internet, just go into your settings tab on the intro menu for the PS3 and hit system update. Use the via internet option and it finds the newest version...2.70. Takes a bit to download but, when it's done you get to enjoy watching the otherwise $30 drink coaster.

Had a problem not loading discs like everyone else then quit reading discs sent ps3 to repair facility got it back and would play just fine until i put rockband 2 in then it froze and quit reading discs...

After Sony repairs your machine they give you a 90 day warranty.

Time to call them again.

Make sure you tell them explicitly that you want a NEW blu-ray drive installed.

Otherwise they'll just throw another used one into your machine and this will happen again.

Also NEVER update the firmware with a disc inside.

Best of luck!
