Question about Western Digital Elements powered by WD 320 GB External USB (WDE1U3200N) Hard Drive

Broken Western Digital 320GB external hard drive...

One day one of the plug wires on my hard drive got tangled up with some other wires connected to my laptop. I pulled on the hard drive plug wire, and actually yanked the USB slot clean out of the actual hard drive, thus disconnecting it. I have taken the actual hard drive apart, trying to figure out how to repair it. The good news is, I now know how to dismantle the drive's components and re-assemble them. The bad news is, the USB slot piece won't stay attached because I don't know how to re-attach it to the motherboard(?) properly. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

You will either need a soldering iron or you'll have to improvise some sort of reflow method. Does it look like the copper traces & tabs are still there or have they been lifted when the port was yanked off? If the are still intact, you may be able to resolder the USB port, maybe an electronics savy friend with a soldering iron will help you with this. If you want somebody else to do it for you there is Data Recovery NYC. Also there is good information on logic board repairs on hddguru.com.

Not recognised malfunction

Sounds like your drive may be faulty with the rattling - if I were you I'd back up everything off it pretty quickly, then send the drive back to western Digital if under warranty. I wouldnt open it otherwise your warranty will almost certainly be void.
