Question about Gateway M505 Notebook

1 Answer

Gateway M505 internal cd-rom slot does not take in a cd dvd

Since a couple of months, the cd-rom does not allow me to insert a cd, feels as if something is blocking the slot and am sure there is no cd in there, otherwise the cd details would have been available in my computer.

Using the Gateway manuals I was able to open the cd-rom drive but was not sure if there were any ways to repair the cd-rom after opening it?

I have no idea how to start looking up my cd-rom unlike my previous purchases of hard drives (ATA/SATA), RAM (SD,DDR, pins.. ), keyboard(model) on e-bay as I clearly knew what I wanted from the specifications. I have no idea what varieties, specifications and types exist for an internal notebook cd/dvd drive. How can I find out or figure out where to start in deciding the specification of the cd-rw/dvd-rw drive that suits my notebook? Obviously there were some models that exactly matched with what I was looking for but did not have a dvd-rw and they were for an APPLE notebook. My notebook reads Matsushita internal drive CW-8123-C but I am worried if the connections and if there are any universal standards and some other factors that might not work for my machine for some reason!

    I have one model on e-bay that seems to match perfectly;
    gatewayM505 cd/dvd rw

but it costs me 75$ plus shipping :-?

    Gateway P/N: 5502789
    Slot-loading 8X/10X/10X/24X DVD/CDRW combo drive drive module
Drive made by MKE. Model CW-8122-C (or higher)
With matching faceplate, caddy and connector for Gateway M500 and M505 series notebook.

Is there a good place to start learning about these drive specifications before I make a purchase? And, what about repairing, I could not find a single link to open repair these things as I really like to being an Electrical Engineer myself.

Thanks a bunch for your inputs!

    Krishna

Ok, I bought the new cd-rom from e-bay with the same configuration and the user even posted it as an M505 cd-rom. I plugged in the new cd-rom and re-booted my laptop, but somehow it puts itself as a Primary hiding the harddrive (verified the same in BIOS). I am able to boot from this new cd-rom (as it reads the windows OS bootable CD) but I have no clue how the new cd-rom is able to put itself in the primary rather than as a slave and hide the harddrive? When I remove this new cd-rom everything is back to normal!

Is there some thing that I have to change in BIOS or rather update BIOS (I have never heard or done something like this). I see BIOS updates in the Gateway webiste when searching for M505 application drivers and updates. They say that by burning their BIOS application on a cd-rom and booting it from the cd-rom, you can update the BIOS. Will this help?

Not unless you know A LOT about electronics. It's best to just remove the drive and buy a replacement on ebay.

You can either search for M505 drive

or use the part numbers from the drive if you want an exact replacement.

Best of luck!

If you have the recovery disks for you computer insert them into the CD/DVD ROM and follow the on screen wizards. If not then you have to order a recovery Drive from Gateway or you can download the ISO image of desired operating system and burn it on a DVD and then do a clean install. Afterwards download the required driver from gateway.

Cd is stuck in my gateway computer

If you open Computer in the Start Menu, right click on the DVD/CD Rom, select Eject , it still will not open? Look for a "pin-hole" on the DVD/CD drawer, near the button, insert a pager clip. If the CD has exploded, which happened to me, you will have to remove the DVD/CD Rom and dissemble it.

Opening disk drive compartment

If you stll have this problem, then you might try a couple of things..

Firstly, a boot of the pc usually will allow the drive to be opened.. But I'm sure you have tried that.. So, there are a couple of other ways.. There is a small pin hole in the front of 'most' CD & DVD rom drives. This is used for emergency situations when the cd will not 'dismount'. Be careful here. Use a paper clip & insert it gently into the pin hole. Only use a light pressure & you should feel a small switch plate. Gently push it with the (extended) paper clip. It will switch the open button & should allow the drive to open. Thirdly, go to 'Start' (button), 'My Computer' highlight the CD rom drive (left mouse click) then right mouse select 'eject' from the menu options.. Actually, if you are still reading, do this first. If it fails, boot the pc & try it again, before using the paperclip method. good luck. Rgds,

Depends - what gateway? the one you listed under?? Because the model you posted with already came with a DVD drive.

Reply with the model of your machine and i can probably find you help. Gateway usually has instructions on their site.

The instructions for the M305CRV are here.

That model can use pretty much any standard laptop CD if you dont mind the face not matching get a generic drive like the Sony CRX880a at
