Gateway M505 internal cd-rom slot does not take in a cd dvd
Since a couple of months, the
cd-rom does not allow me to insert a cd, feels as if something is
blocking the slot and am sure there is no cd in there, otherwise the cd
details would have been available in my computer.
Using the Gateway manuals I was able to open the cd-rom drive but was not sure if there were any ways to repair
the cd-rom after opening it?
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

Any EIDE (non Sata) interal drive should work on this computer. However, first I would check the internal cables on the drive to ensure the are plugged in tight (you may just have a loose cable). Check both the mother board end and the drive end.
Personally I would go puppy linux over 98, but that is me.
2 possible issues....1 driver for the dvd rom is corrupt.....try using the cd the unit came with and re-installing the driver....2 bad rom....if your under warranty...try just sending the rom in....if now...flip over the laptop....find the 1 screw that will let you slide out the rom...look for the part number/ model number....find one on ebay....real cheap there...usually under 10 bucks....try cc.texas.smart.shop (member) that is me and i have a few gateway roms avail.
replace it. samsung cd rom even its dvd writer have lots of problems. sometime they dont want to open unless you leave a cd in it. sometime it doesnt read cd. better change it. get a Sony, LG, Pioneer DVD writer.
If you stll have this problem, then you might try a couple of things..
Firstly, a boot of the pc usually will allow the drive to be opened.. But I'm sure you have tried that.. So, there are a couple of other ways.. There is a small pin hole in the front of 'most' CD & DVD rom drives. This is used for emergency situations when the cd will not 'dismount'. Be careful here. Use a paper clip & insert it gently into the pin hole. Only use a light pressure & you should feel a small switch plate. Gently push it with the (extended) paper clip. It will switch the open button & should allow the drive to open. Thirdly, go to 'Start' (button), 'My Computer' highlight the CD rom drive (left mouse click) then right mouse select 'eject' from the menu options.. Actually, if you are still reading, do this first. If it fails, boot the pc & try it again, before using the paperclip method. good luck. Rgds,
