Question about Honeywell CT87B ROUND HEATING&COOLING MECHANICAL THERMOSTAT - WHITE Heater

1 Answer

Gas heater shuts off & won't come back on

We've been having this problem for several nights:

We have a gas heating system. At bedtime I turn the heat down and it completes it's cycle & then shuts off. Then it won't come back on. We've tried turning it off & on, turning it up & down (we have an old style, manual thermostat) to try to get it to kick on, and nothing happens. When the house gets reallllly cold it finally kicks back on and runs continuously until it reaches the temp set on the thermostat. Then it shuts off again & won't come on.

Hoping that we just need to replace the thermostat! Whadya think?

Can we turn the heat off 2-3 rooms with this brivis wombat 92 gas heating system - heating just the parts of the house we choose.

You could freeze water pipes if bathrooms are connected to those rooms - on a cold winter day (depending where you are). All gas appliances should have a shutoff valve. Shutting that off may screw up the main controller - it won't get the proper signal that the flame started ok.

Goodman gmt070-4a wont heat, like the pilot light is out or something

turn gas supply on....turn gas valve to pilot....press down and hold to allow gas to come through pilot tubing.....light the pilot right by the thermal couple, once lit hold valve down for about 60-90 secs...then release ur hand on the gas valve and turn the valve to on position............make sure the bloody tstat is turned off before doin anything other wise burners will fire up soon as you turn valve to on position

Model md200tbe shuts off, pilot and burner

1) Try blowing it out with a hair dryer. Dust does lots of weird things to gas heaters.

2) There is a thermocouple that opens when it is hot and makes the gas keep flowing. It is a small metal tube that sits directly in the flame. When it heats up, the gas flows. If that is shot, then it won't keep the gas flowing, so it will turn off when you let go of the button. Try tapping it lightly with the tip of a screwdriver to knock it loose. There is about a 10% chance that this might fix it temporarily until you can get a new one.

For some reason the heater does not generate heat. the fan works but no heat. Any Ideas?

I've got an easy way for you to check, and then we can help you from there.
First pop open both lids to your furnace (this may require a screwdriver). Turn up your thermostat, push the safety interlock button in if it has one (it's a button that turns off the power when the doors are removed), and watch.

On most modern furnaces (past 20-25 years) you'll hear/see:
1. Inducer fan
2. orange glow (ignitor)
3. Gas valve opening and ignition (flames)
4. Main Fan.

that's normal heater operation.
The most common issue here is a burned out ignitor, in which case you wouldn't see the orange glow but the sequence would attempt to continue anyway (the gas valve will open and hiss gas, but it won't lite, then it'll give up and try again a few minutes later).

On older furnaces there's a pilot light to start with, the click of the gas valve and boom... ignition.

On new furnaces it's
Inducer fan
gas valve opening
spark - ignition
Main fan.

and there are some oddballs in between, particularly the Lennox Pulse. If that's your furnace just back away slowly and call a professional... some guys won't even touch those, so be sure to mention what it is... if you call a pro.

So go ahead and watch it run, then tell me/us what you see.

I've got a 23 yr old 30DV3 whose pilot light works, and the thermostat & heating element seem to work, but not well. With the thermostat set at full hot, it just barely throws out any heat at all. ...

As I'm sure you already know, Empire Comforts Systems, no longer makes that model heater and hasn't for some years, now. I mentioned that, because if your unit needs parts, they may be almost impossible to get. In any event, there are a several things that may be causing the problem.

  • Low Gas Pressure - Burner is not receiving enough gas. Check for obstructions and have gas pressure at the unit checked.
  • Clogged burner or air intake (venturi valve) is partially clogged. Clean burner ports and venturi valve.
  • Gas line Shut Off Valve at heater not fully open. Check Gas line Shut Off Valve.
At 23 years old, you've gotten your money's worth out of this unit and it may be time to replace it. Empire makes several Direct Vent Wall Furnaces that are rated as High Efficiency Furnaces. In the long run, the money saved in fuel cost, would be worth installing a new one.

Hope this helps you solve the problem.

Heater still lets out heat

Hi, if you can't find the pilot shut off, all wall heaters have a gas line that supplies gas to it, the main line at the unit. There should also be a gas flex line going to it. It will have a valve on it to shut gas down to the unit for the summer. This will solve your problem. You will have to look for it, as it may be hidden from site for looks and decoration. You will find it.
