    Hi Tony;

    Thanks for you suggestions.

It was a taskfull job, and the charge arround the flash supprised me. I think I shorted something out.

Some cables came loose, and I can 't figure out how to connect them. I also ended with two small plastic gears that came out of nowhere.

I was able to clean the lens interior, but the camera (after reassembing it) will not start up anymore. It was a good try to Fixya!

    Thanks again for you response,

    Max Rogers

Its a big job, If your petty handy, You have to start from the back of the camera, Remove rear cover,Then front cover, Next lcd Display unit, Hopefully your haven\'t put the battery\'s in the camera for a while because the flash has high voltage in it, if you have, You must discharge first, them take circuit board out,Then lens assy, Now the fun part, You have to take the lens apart from the back also, Like I said its a big job, Better when you get this far into the camera you just replace the lens, with a used one form a diff camera (same model )

My canon powershot a640 comes up with the message...........................NO MEMORY CARD i have eliminated the memory cards, what else can it be?

The most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out.

Other causes include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card).

In this link could find some troubleshooting tips: fix-for-memory-card-error.

hope helps.

Powershot A640 Could Not Be Powered On, Burnt Smell My Powershot A640 died during a picture shot, lens remaining open. I thought it may be due to the dead batteries. But after putting new batteries and...

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel after dropping it. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful.

Regards
Andrea

I also cannot get our A640 to power on, either with new batteries or with a power cord. We are a non-profit Boys & Girls Club and replacing it is really a last resort. We use it with our Card-ID system...

Things to check first are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Details on what needs to be checked may be seen here. It won't work for every case, but it's worth a try.

New batteries but still no power on.

Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, the camera may require professional repair.

Not turning on and has strange smell

Powershot A640 Could Not Be Powered On, Burnt Smell

My Powershot A640 died during a picture shot, lens remaining open. I thought it may be due to the dead batteries. But after putting new batteries and pushing the on/off button, the on/off indicator blinked once then shut off by itself. After a while, a strange smell came from camera batteries area, and I could feel warm there too. Immediately I took out all the batteries from camera.

When checking the posts here the other day, I tried one solution and got the lens back to close: first took out the memory card from camera, then put the new batteries in; push the on/off button with no memory card. I found the lens retracted a little before camera shut off by itself. I pushed on/off button three times to get the lens fully close. However, the burnt smell came out again. I immediately took out the batteries.
Did I get a short circuit inside? Is there any ways to fix it?

A640 Lock-up

Take out the OTHER battery, the one that maintains the date / time and then the camera can 'reboot' cleanly when you put some fresh batteries in it.
