Question about Western Digital MyBook Studio 1 TB USB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My western digital 1 TB no longer works

It began to act sluggish for a week, I was able to access the files but it took awile to load up on the screen. Its about 70% full, almost all of it are full lenght movies. Now when i plug it in it causes the window to not respond and lockes up my computor or it just stays loading when im at the my computor window. When i unplugged it the window returns to normal and everything else works fine. The auto play window no longer pops up either. The little blue lgihts are blinking inside, not at the same time but they alternate, and there are no wierd sounds coming from the hard drive. You can still hear and feel the hard drive spinning inside. I have tried using a different cable to see if that was the problem but the two known good cables I tried had the same effect. I have never dropped it or nuged it in a way that may have cause damage. I am in iraq and a recent dust storm cause me to used canned air on all my electronic equipment. Could i have knocked something loose? Is the data recoverable? Please Help. Thanks

The data is probably recoverable, the drive may have dust inside the servo causing it to drag down..Opening a drive is never a good idea, but you may try spraying a couple more times.....also, if you can place it in the freezer overnight(i know it sounds crazy) it may help pull everything back into alignment at least long enough to recover the data.\

Good Luck, God Bless

FAT32 was the file type used for the early Windows operating systems. With the release of Windows NT and XP it switched to NTFS file system. FAT32 is still used however to transfer data between Mac and PC. The downside of FAT32 is the files read slower and file size cannot exceed 4GB. If you do not use a Mac I would suggest using the Disk Management utility in Control Panel under Computer Management to convert it to NTFS.

Problem with Accessing Western Digital WD My Passport Essential SE 1 Tb external driver, please guide to resolve problem with windows XP

Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management Then go into Disk Management. Hopefully you will see a drive with a capacity of about 480 GB (plus or minus), that's your disk.
Right click on it and select change drive letter and change the drive letter to something that isn't in use.
If that doesn't work or it doesn't show up, go into the Device Manager from the Computer Management screen and see if there is anything under disk drives with a yellow or red symbol next to it. If so, right click it, select uninstall, then unplug the disk drive and plug it back in.

Western Digital My Passport Essential SE External USB 2.0 Portable Black 720GB Hard Drive too slow..

Try plugging it into a high speed usb port, formating it with the size of your files in mind, so for instance if you have lots of big files, raise the allocation file size and visa versa, otherwise buy a faster one.

I can no longer access any of my files on my wd1tb network drive

Hello,

It sounds like either the NAS enclosure or the drive(s) inside have failed.

If the enclosure has failed and you don't have any crucial files on it that you don't already have elsewhere, contact www.westerndigital.com for a warranty replacement.

If the enclosure has failed and you DO have important files on it, try having your local PC shop move the hard drive(s) into a new enclosure, if that works you're done, buy the new enclosure.

If the new enclosure fails, your drive is damaged and you will need a pro to help get back your files. If this is the case, reply back with you location(Country, State and City) and I will pass along recommendations for your neck of the woods.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
