Mine did the same when new, i checked all as above then i noticed that i could twist the round peice that will unplug) (right behind the carpet-bare floor knob) and then i got suction at the base to be able to vacuum the floors, then i notice that there was a peice of plastic broken off that actually pushed a black latch down when either pushing the handle all the way up or down this lets the round piece i'm talking about swap over from base suction to handle suction! hope this helps and everyone can understand what i'm talking about! you have to look close to see where the 2" by 2" piece of plastic is missing!

From your description of the problem, it sounds as though the wand/hose is blocked. To test this, please remove the wand from the machine and switch on, testing the suction from the top of the wand handle. If the suction is poor, remove the wand from the hose and test the suction from the top of the hose. If its strong from the hose itself, the wand is blocked and you will need to clear this.
If there is poor suction from the hose, you can remove this by unclipping it from the base of the machine and can then remove any blockages. It is also worth checking the hose for any splits or holes.

You would need to release the wand/hose assembly from the machine then slide the hose right to the bottom of the wand and press the release catch to disconnect from the wand. Then at the base of the hose you shoudl be able to un-clip the hose to remove it completely from the machine.

Just resolved the same problem...couldn't find a blockage anywhere, but pulled handle out of hose and extended hose as far as possible upward. Aha! There was blockage in the hose at the very bottom where the flexible hose meets the rigid part.. There is a lever which releases the entry to the bottom of the hose. A pencil, lots of coins, a crumpled receipt and general dirt were stuck. Easy to clean and now it works like new again.
