When the motor starts, a switch in the motor is closed until the power is interrupted.

You might be able to have just the switch replaced but sometimes the entire motor is replaced.

Dryer only runs as long as the start switch is pushed and held. When I let go of switch the dryer stops.

Time for a diagnosis before something gets burnt beyond recovery. If you can fix appliances, there is a tech sheet hidden inside the unit somewhere behind the control panel. If not, an appliance repair tech can get you fixed up the same day if he has parts in his truck.

Dryer won't stay on without the button held in

Most likely the motor relay or the even heat board is bad.

Electric dryer, runs for about 20 min then shuts down, can restart after a period of time, then runs about 20 min and shuts down

you have a bad motor, most likely you don't clean out the dryer, this is the number 1 killer of dryers.the vent line, the duct that the lint filter slides into and the cabinet where the motor is needs to be cleaned out if it's gas once a year, electric once every two years.all a dryer does is move air, when lint starts to build up the dryer starts to run hotter then normal from the lint build up and the dryer can't move the air as easy as when everything is cleaned out and then parts start to brake like the thermal fuse will pop from running to hot or the motor starts to over heat like yours and shuts down.when the motor gets hot the oil that's inside it leaks out, you'll see it stuck to the side wall and on the rear end of the drum with lint stuck to it.there's an overload in the motor that pops when the motor gets hot and after a while when it cools down the overload resets, that's why you can start it again after a while so basicly you have to replace the motor and clean out the dryer,if the vent line is a long run, remove it from the back of the dryer and with a leaf blower blow it out, you'll see all kinds of stuff blow out through the outside duct and clean out the duct that the lint filter goes into and the cabinet where the motor is or replace the dryer.

Runs when PTS held but shuts off when released/no heat

No problem at all.The motor has a start and run winding.Your run winding is bad.The reason you have no heat is the run winding has to run to close the contacts on the motor switch.Replace the motor ,both problems solved. Hope this helps Please rate my response :)

Dryer won't stay on when button is pushed the button has to be held down for the dryer to run

A centrifugal switch has failed within the dryer. The centrifugal switch maintains electrical flow to the motor after the start button has been released (this is a safety measure) When you press the start button you put power directly to the motor; once started the centrifugal switch then puts power to the motor until the time then shuts it down.
I hope this may have helped you,

Whirlpool 110 electric dryer will not keep running

When you press the start button you complete a circuit bringing the juice into your dryer to run the motor the igniter or heating elements and what ever else goes whee when your dryer is drying. So if you press the button to complete the circuit then when you let go of the button it would stand to reason that it break that flow and shut it all down. However in a dryer there is something of a centrifugal switch that kicks in and keeps that circuit open and flowing with juice once the drum begins to turn and you let go of the button. That's why in a normal situation if you don't hold the button down long enough the dryer will cut right back off or if you open the door to the dryer to throw something in and close it before it quits turning it will stay running. Sounds like you could add this centrifugal switch to the list of possible culprits in this mystery. O7OUT
