My Freeagent external hard drive doesn't show up on My Computer

I can't access my Freeagent hard drive. I recently had a mac, and am trying to transfer everything onto my new PC. The PC registers that it is there (I can safely remove it, for example), but it isn't showing up on any drives. I'm at a complete loss.

Your Mac would have formatted the Seagate drive as HFS+ (journaled) format. If you have access to a Mac, copy your data off the Seagate to any Mac, then use your PC to reformat the Seagate drive in FAT32 format. Macs recognize FAT32 format, and can store data in it, but can't create the format. The Mac holding your data can store it on the Seagate in the FAT32 format, and you can then copy the files to your PC. Hope this helps.

The base format of the drive is not one that the PC will understand. Baseically, the format is the way in which information is stored on the physical disk. There are a number of "standard" formats that you may have heard about such as NTFS or FAT32. These define what the "blocks" of information look like. Mac machines use a particular format that the PC may not understand. Some use NTFS others do not. What format is the Mac disk in? Do you know?

Plug it back in and try this. Right click my computer and click "Manage"
When the window opens select "Disc Management". In the bottom of the screen you will see all the Disk drives installed on you computer. Right click on your drive and select "Properties". When the window open click the "Tools" tab and finally Run the Error Checking Tool. It will scan and fix any issues with the disk. Cheers :)

Hello. I recently installed Windows 7 64bit Ultimate edition. I was initally unable to access my seagate external HDD. I tried to take ownership and played around with the permission settings to no avail...

It may be the USB chipset on the motherboard that needs a new 64bit driver downlod. I used Driver Detective to update my Intell chipset when I upgraded to 7 now all my external drives show up. Try using other USB ports on your computer first to force the computer to reload the driver for the new port.

Freeagent

Turn off computer.  Unplug hard drive from computer port.  Turn on.  uninstall from Add/Remove Hardware in Control Panel.  Reboot computer.  Plug in external hard drive.  Verify Full System functionality in Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device manager.  If nothing is expanded all IS functional.

FreeAgent Drive cannot be Modified?

The problem with the compatibility between your external drive and your mac is that freeagent drives are formatted in NTFS and the Mac uses FAT32. Mac's can read from NTFS drives but cannot write to them. I'm afraid that the only solution is to re-format the drive in FAT32 format if you want to be able to write to it.
