This error can be a couple of things. If the "boot block" on the disk has become faulty, the system won't recognize that the disk has an operating system on it and will generate this error message. If the disk is defective completely, the same error will occur. If you have a boot floppy or CD, try re-writing the boot block on the disk. If that fails to resolve the problem, the disk is defective and will need to be replaced.

The disk you describe is a standard size and should be available anywhere disks are sold. There is nothing special about it. Just make sure that you purchase an IDE drive not SATA.

sounds like your pc is trying to boot from a disc drive without an operating system installed on it. I sometimes get this with my toshiba 1.5G external. Try turning off any non-booting drive connected to the machine and try again. If you don't have any external device connected then your system disc is either corrupt or dead and needs replacing or the operating system reinstalling.

Hi govindcg,

This is an early Warning system for computers of a pending Hard Drive failure. I greatly suggest that you back up your files and replace the Hard Drive as this is the only way to fix it. Hope this helps.

I visualise this msg on pc 'non disk system error or disk error'

This error is caused by the boot device (hard drive, DVD, etc) not having the required Operating System files. You may need to find a different Boot Device, like maybe a DVD, with the boot files on it. Boot from DVD and reinstall HD files.

Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

I have a Western digital model wd2500b007-rnn
and I cannot get either my PC or my laptop to recognize the drive. I isolated the drive to another computer with the same error. It says USB device not reognized. I also tried a different port. I have not tried different cables. Can I retrieve the old data on the drive?

Did you find a resolution for this? I am having the same problem. None of my PCs can recognize the drive. Formatting seems to be the only choice but I need to recover my old data first.

Disk repair

If the hard drive is defective, there is no repair. If it has errors such as virus etc, then it can be repaired. I would have to know specifics such as operating system and what errors you have. When hard drives fail then they would have to be replaced. This is the reason you must back up your files, because all your data will be lost.
Hard drives are hardware devices that you use to store all of your programs and operating systems. They are many different kinds and capacity such as serial and parallel and the amount of space on the drive.Hard disk drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Click on the link and learn more.

Hard drive failure - Compaq N400

Yes, your hard drive may have serious problems. Does the machine have a floppy drive? If so, will it boot to DOS? Or, if you have an XP or linux install CD, will it boot from CD?

Can you hear the hard drive spin up when computer is powered on? Some drives are very quiet, so you might have to put your ear close. Does the drive have an abnormal clicking sound? Western Digital drives were famous for this symptom of failure.

Try swapping the drive into a spare or friend's computer. If the symptoms are nearly identical (no boot), then this points to the drive as failed. Note, that if it does get part way through the boot process, your Operating system (XP, 2000) may blue screen, instead of completely booting. But, if it does get that far, there may be more hope for the drive.

Suggest also you download manufacturer's diagnostic software and run it.

Hard drive failures are very common, some happening within the warranty period or shortly thereafter. This is why backing up your data to CD, flash drive, or other media is so important.
