If you had a prior version of Elements on your computer, make sure you have uninstalled it via Add/Remove Programs. This process doesn't remove everything, however. You also have to remove the database cache file manually. To do this, navigate to c:\Program files\Common files\Adobe\Adobe pcd\cache\ and delete the file named "cache.db" by dragging it to the recycle bin. After I did this, my install went fine.

\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM computer says that its either missing or corrupt. how do I fix

Dean,

To resolve this issue you can boot to Windows disk and run the "Repair Install" on one of the setup screens. This should repair the system32/config allowing you to boot back into Windows.

Step 1

Place the Windows XP Professional installation CD into your computer's disc drive and restart your computer.
Step 2

Press any key on your keyboard when you see the message "Press any key to boot from CD..." appear on the screen.
Step 3

Press the "Enter" key and then press the "F8" key.
Step 4

Select your Windows XP installation and then press the "R" key. The repair installation process begins, and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to finish. Once the process has finished, you can use the computer again.

Unfinished XP upgrade

The xp set-up page appear on the middle of the set-up right after the restart (first one ) ..if this is the case you should insert the disk again ..and let it finish the installation ..(will stay a few minutes and do nothing and after that will start installing devices have patience )
It may also be a case of files not being loaded well and in this case just take the installing from the start by inserting the disk again ..and press any key when it asks ..format the C drive after choosing it as location ..and continue with the loading of files and after restart ..do not press any key ..and let it boot to the set-up and go on with finishing installation .From the restart point it should last about 39 minutes to the finish ..
Please do not hesitate to ask any question if you do not understand ..
In sort ..insert the disk and start it ..and let it continue the installation cause it is just to the middle ..when you finish ..install drivers ..make teh connection ..and install antivirus..and you are done .

Shredder .msi will not install missing file

ø ShredIt for Windows is distributed as a zipped .msi (Microsoft Installer) file format.Double-click the .zip to de-compress it. Then double-click the .msi to install it.(this is a Microsoft Installer Package) If the installer does not launch or the installer indicates you need to upgrade, go to the appropriate Microsoft web page to download and install the current version of the Microsoft Installer for your version of Windows. For further information, refer to the ShredIt for Windows Read Me (pdf)

ø Start ShredIt for Windows.The Registration Dialog Box will be displayed on the bottom of the Main Dialog Box.Enter the Registration Key/Serial Number supplied when you paid for ShredIt.

o If you purchased online, the easiest way to do this is to copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the information from the email we sent you. If you purchased a CD, the Serial Number/Registration Key is also on the CD jacket.

o If there is a problem with the registration information, the "Invalid Registration Information" dialog will appear. To correct the problem, refer to the "ShredIt for Windows FAQ".

ø Put ShredIt in a convenient place by putting a shortcut on the desktop, by the Recycle Bin.To put an alias to ShredIt X on the desktop, follow these steps:

Select the ShredIt application.
On the "C" Drive, navigate to the program file you want to make a shortcut for by doing the following:
From Start-> Click on "My Computer"
-> Click on "C" Drive
-> Click on "Program Files"
-> Click on "ShredIt" Folder
-> Click on the ShredIt Iconby single-clicking the ShredIt Icon.

(
Ensure that you select the ShredIt application, not the entire folder. (The application is called "ShredIt, ShredIt for Windows" and has a shredder icon. The folder is called "ShredItPC", has a folder icon and contains the application, the demo application and the documentation.)

From the File menu, select Create Shortcut.Drag the "Shortcut to ShredIt" to a convenient place. Most users put it on the desktop, above the Recycle Bin.

Desktop icons lost

Sadly, there is no straightforward command you can use to recover them, but well, there are three ways, really, that you can get your icons back, depending on which ones were lost, that you are referring to. for this, I'm assuming you're running a more recent version of Windows.
----- For Windows XP ------
1) for recently deleted icons- check your Recycle bin, they could still be there.

2)for system-installed icons, such as My Computer, and Internet Explorer- you can recover these by going into your Display Properties (Start -> Control Panel -> Display). Select the Desktop tab, and click on Customize Desktop. Make sure the "General" tab is selected, then, under the "Desktop icons" section, tick off the icons you want to restore. click on "Ok" when you're finished, and Presto! those icons are up on your screen.

3)If the above two options don't work, you may have to add them manually ( a pain, I know). To add a shortcut in this fashion, right-click anywhere on the desktop, and select New -> Shortcut. you will have another window appear on your screen, asking you where the file you are making a shortcut to is located, and what you want to call it. follow the steps, and when you're finished, you should have a working icon. (another option would be to reinstall the software that made the icons, but that's also a pain in itself.).

----for windows vista ----

1) check the Recycle Bin (same procedure as Windows Xp, although, if your recycle bin option is deleted, then you have a problem that can be solved by using #2)

2) For system-installed shortcuts- follow This excellent tutorial.

3)Manually installing shortcuts- same as for XP.
