If you cannot see anything looking through the view finder, that is either a lens problem, a defective view finder, or a faulty sensor.

For any of this faults you need a technician to fix the camera, call the Canon customer support number printed on camera documentation.

Try also removing the batteries and replacing with fresh ones, to exclude battery problem and to reset the camera, if there is really a fault this will not work, but you have to try.

Regarding the manual, you can download below.

When i press the button to snap a shot, nothing happens. when I look through the view finder I only see black. I also can not advance the film. I put in new batteries and (yes) the lens cap is off.

Set camera to M90 or B, it will free the shutter. If if fires at these settings but not others then you have an electronic problem. If it does not fire at M90 or B then you have a mechanical problem. Clean the battery cap with a hard eraser and make sure the batteries are in correctly - does the battery check work? Also check to make sure that the battery compartment is not broken. Using a thin round tool, insert it into the battery compartment and push down slightly (not Hard!) and see if the battery compartment gives or you see a crank. Also check for impact around the rewind knob. The FRE resister plate there is made of glass and impact breaks it.

Take the lens off the camera and look inside. you should see a mirror angled at 45 degrees. If you do not see the mirrir, it is probably stuck in the up position and repair is necessary

Your coin battery that powers the memory system of your camera may be failing. This battery keeps your settings and powers your on board computer. Do not confuse this with your picture battery, as that only powers the lens and picture taking ability. The coin battery holds the program. See page 38 of your manual "Replacing the Date/Time battery."

The view finder is black, how can I clear it?

It sounds like the mirror is stuck up! You can check this if you remove the lens and look at the mirror. If it is horizontal and all you can see is the film plane (black box), then it is stuck up. If you are lucky, your camera may just need new batteries. Worth a check too that the shutter speed is not set to "B" and the lens cap is left on. If the camera has sat for more than about 6 months, the batteries will definitely be dead.

If its black when you look thru the viewfinder its likely because the mirror is stuck in the up position. It will often do that if the batteries are exhausted. Try replacing the batteries.

The mirror might release back down if you turn the shutter speed dial to M90. This is a manual release of 1/90 second for when you need the shot but don't have any power.

When you look in the lens opening and adjust the aperture dial, you are seeing the aperture open and close. Not the shutter. You need to open the back of the camera (without film) and take a photo to see the shutter curtains open and close.

You should have a read thru the manual to become familiar with the camera and its operation:

Canon 3000N Auto focus fault

No extra batteries.

Usually this is a lens fault as the focusing gear is all in the lens. Clicking sounds as if a rear pinion has cracked. It's not uncomon in the 'prosumer' level lenses where plastic gears are used a lot.

It's just possible the fault is which the auto-manual switch. This usually has a mechanical clutch coupled to it which physically disconnects the gearbox from the focusing ring, as well as operating a switch to tell the camera to turn off the AF system.

Can't see out of viewfinder

The mirror motor is probably the problem, you'll usually hear a whirring noise like a motor spinning. It's about a $125 repair, requiring the mirror box to be removed and the mirror driving motor replaced. Pentax originally put a plastic gear on the motor shaft - the replacements have a brass gear.

Problem with lens

I can't understand if besides the noise the camera works or not... If noise is the only problem, then its normal for the camera to make noises, especially from the lens since it has moving parts. Please post your problem again and try to describe the problem itself in more detail. Otherwise try following the manuals instructions on a soft and hard reset of the camera, which might solve your problem. You can get a copy of the manual here on fixya from the product page. If there is no reset procedure on the manual try disconnecting it from any power source for a few days(batteries, cable etc), and then try again. Also try replacing the batteries with new ones. Good luck!
