You have 2 options:

1. buy an external modem that connects to your computer via serial port. There are some models that connects also via USB

2. buy a PCMCIA type modem card. This should be a better option with regards to less wiring involved.

Will a westell modem work on a computer that had dial up.

What do you mean that pc has dial up? Did you mean that you have a dial up connection to the internet? If that is the case, using a westell modem is not necessary because dial up connection just uses a phone cable directly plug in at the back of your pc where you will see a port for phone cable. If you have a dsl connection and your pc is currently configured for fial up set-up, then you can use the westell modem but need to check first if westell modem s compatible with your internet service provider.

I need to open ports on my router

Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press Enter
Type IPCONFIG
Look for: Default Gateway ... 192.168.123.456
Start Internet Explorer
Type: http://192.168.123.456
Login to your router
Click the "Advanced" settings.
Use it to tell the router to "forward" IP-packets for a specific port to a specific port on one of the computers on your LAN. Compare it to a telephone switchboard operator -- you dial their "public" number, and then dial the "local" of the one employee at the company, and you get connected to the "correct" person.

The tel 1 and 2 buttons are flashing green along with stand by. The phone line has no dial tone and its busy when we call the line..

When the tel light blinks this indicates that the line is in use. To trouble shoot this issue you will need to connect a phone directly to the tel 1 port of your modem. If you have dial tone when directly connect that means that there is an issue with the internal wiring of the home. If you still do not have any dial tone with the phone directly connect than there is an issue with the modem and it needs to be replaced.

I hope that information above has helped is some way.
If possible please rate this solution.

Can't set up dial-up connection

Restart the computer.
Enter BIOS setup.
Click to "disable" both the COM1 and COM2 (or Serial1 and Serial 2) ports.
Save-and-exit from BIOS setup.
Restart Windows.
The modem should now be assigned as 'COM1', and should work.

It is best to remove the dial up portions because it will help eliminate confusion within your system as to which connection to use. You will be much happier once you get hooked up with broadband....good luck.

I had been using dial-up internet and then switched over to broadband internat. Now since I have disconnected the broadband net, I want to use the dial-up modem. However, I am gtg a note that the device...

It's kind of difficult to tell what your exact problem may be, but note that the cable and connections for dial-up and broadband are different.

The dial-up cable is telephone wire connected to its port in an internal modem. Broadband is connected with thicker Ethernet cable connected to a network card.

The ports look similar, but the Ethernet port is a bit larger.

So, you need to connect to the right port/card with the right cable.

When you connect to dial-up, you should hear a beep-beep-beep sound from the modem.

Hope this info helps.

Modem

You want a 56K modem at least. Modems are becoming less common these days as brpadband (DSL/Cable/WiFi,etc) are becoming more cost effective.

Does your computer take PCI cards? If so, you might be able to find a PCI modem. There are also some serial modems still being sold. If your computer has 9 pin serial ports, you could try to use a serial modem. I think there also might be a USB modem that you could use, providing your PC has serial ports.
