Open My computer, Tools, Folder Options, Check Show Hidden Files, Check show system files.. Then check your files from the My computer icon..
The problem would be sometimes once your hard drive being infected by the virus, it will hide your files especially the NOTEPAD.EXE virus. It replicate your original folder and hide it, then it will show a copied folder which is also thesame with your original folder.(ex: the original folder would be PICTURES, then once it infected by the virus, the PICTURES folder will now replaced as NOTEPAD.EXE folder, then the original was been hide)..
if the virus infected most of your files & programs, and REFORMATTING is the best solution, but you'll lost everything. But if you're going to make a BACK-UP of everything, then virus will have it's back-up copy as well; so if you do have a licensed anti-virus better call the anti virus support number for them to manually removed the virus on your pc.
If it is a bad virus that won't let you do anything on the computer, follow the instructions on this link. If you can install programs on your computer, follow only steps 7 and 8 from the above link.
To do a clean Windows install, put in the Windows CD and press any key to boot from CD on start up then follow the prompts to install Windows. Right before choosing where to install it, opt to format the drive so that you have a clean install.
Another option is to use the restoration disc that came with your laptop and restore the computer to the factory settings. To do this, put the CD in and on the boot up screen press the F key showed on the bottom of the screen for System Restore.
If that is the case you have to back up all your important files for you will have to reinstall or reformat your whole hard drive back to its original state If you have the operating system cd installation disc you may use that to reformat your computer.
a system restore will restore the system to a set point in time. this will not remove viruses.
a system recovery will reinstall windows to its original factory state by utilizing a recovery partition. this will remove viruses. however, it will also remove any data and software that has been installed on the system.
back up if needed but keep in mind that you could potentially be backing up viruses. especially if the user wants to back up music that was gotten from a peer to peer site such as limewire. this downloads are typically ripe with infections so do so at your own risk.
Your data - In order to ensure don't copy any infected data backup as few executables as possible. BEFORE restoring your data make sure you have antivirus installed and up to date. Perform a full scan after copying the data back to your lt.
Put in the recovery disk and restart your computer. Look for a prompt on the screen to "boot from disk" while it is booting. Press the key it says to press and follow the directions from there.
If there isn't a prompt to boot from disk try pressing Alt and F10 while it boots.
Since the virus has taken it's toll, the F11 built in restore won't work. You will have to acquire an operating system disc in order to fix your problem. Unfortunately, there is no other way around it.
There is no virus in existence other then bios viruses that can survive a reformat restore.
find your restore disks or call the original manufacturer to obtain the original software.
if you do not have a name brand machine. you will need to reformat yourself and re install the OS manually.
