Ortronics CAT6 Patch Cable

Cable installers recommendation - Seattle

By Ranny - usenet poster

I am in the midst of choosing a vendor to install cat6 cable in our
Seattle office. Does anyone have any good/bad experiences with any
particular vendor? The install will be a Belden/Panduit solution. We
are currently considering Netversant, Black Box, and SCI. Any
feedback is appreciated.

Regards,

SteveT

I've been installing Panduit jacks for about 6 years and once you've
used them a couple times, they are by far faster than any of the other
'traditional' style jacks (read Avaya, Hubbell, Amp, or any keystone
type). Yes, they do take a little getting use to, but not that much.
And I think with the changes installation practices (for the better)
that CAT6 are going to require, I think that the Panduit TX6 jacks are
going to be easier than the others.
I've never liked having to use a punch tool on something in my hand.
Always figured I'd end up looking like Jesus after slipping. Oh,
don't bother bringing up 'palm pucks' or what ever contraption vendors
are trying to pass as a way of holding jacks, that will really
increase your installation time.

I prefer Hubbell, Ortronics, Avaya, and Leviton jacks.

Molding, it can be anything from Wiremold to Panduit.

Patch Panels got to be Hubbell or Ortronics. I use also AMP from time to
time.

Wire I like Belden, I dont like Mohawk too much.

Really? I've always found the Panduit Mini-Com jacks easier and faster to
terminate. Though I have had about a 1 in 40 (maybe 50) miswire rate with
those, as the conductors must be cut prior to termination and sometimes slip
out of position during termination. Add in the time to identify the
problem, re-terminate, and re-test, I probably don't actually save any time.
I don't remember any miswires with Leviton or similar jacks.

I have heard some others give the same feedback re: Panduit jacks
(that they take longer to terminate). However, the pricing for
installing Panduit vs. Ortronics has been very similar so far. The
job is around 200 drops.

Good info on middleman/contractor issues. Thanks for the heads-up. I
definitely want to make sure those doing the install are certified
with the components.

HAHA Panduit jacks, I just used them for the first time 2 months ago. You
are right though 100%, biggest pain in the ass to terminate! I'd never use
them again!

How big is the job? I don't know about Panduit Cat6 but their Cat5 jacks are
a pain to terminate compared to other systems. (just my opinion of course)
If it's only a few drops then probably no big deal. I hate the thought of
terminating hundreds of panduit jacks...

I have been contracted to do work for Black Box. They were professional and
paid me but they didn't ask me about my quailifications; only requested what
day they wanted me there.

Are the other companies contractors or will they sub it out? I would cut out
the middleman and go directly to a local contractor.
