Quiet external hard disks

By Odud - usenet poster

Does anyone have one of the new Smartdisk CrossFire 250GB or Iomega
500GB Minimax disks? Or have you used one or seen (heard actually) one
in action? Are they quiet in operation. If it was attached to a Mac
mini in a living room with the mini being used as a media hub would the
noise of the disk be a problem.

Any pointers to other hard disks that are quiet in operation?

The LaCie 1TB Big Disk Extreme Hard Drive with Triple Interface
available on the Apple Store looks interesting. The reviews of it and
some of the other capacities in the range indicate it is quiet.

Anyone used one from that range?

Stream it how? I've just tried to watch a a DVD in DVD Player from a
VIDEO_TS folder stored on the Mac Pro and shared over the wireless
Airport Extreme network. It was very poor. Video and Audio stopping
every few frames.

I'm using a Toshiba 320Gb disk from PC World, or rather two of them. I
bought one last year and decided that although the price is now not
competitive (??100) it's a damned good drive and it is quiet. Bad points are
that they are USB2 only and the lights are very bright. Bright enough to
use a reading light. The drive case is solid and the drive feels very well
built.

It needs reformatting since it is supplied preformatted to NTFS.

They seem to have problems with Firewire connections though: my friend
had his exchanged for another one two times but no luck. He's given up
and is using the USB 2 connector.

I've read similar stories on the web.

One thing that's suspicious is that last time I checked I couldn't find
any info on what chipset they're using for the icybox. Usually the
better ext. drives have an Oxford 911 and state so.

No fans = a cooked and dead disk before too long. I'd use an icybox for
short spell usage (run a backup etc) but if I wanted to use them for
extended use, it wouldn't be my first choice.

The Minimax case itself is very quiet with the fan on Auto, but it
doesn't do anything to baffle the noise of the HD inside it so choose
a quiet HD.

The Minimax turns the disk off with the Mini, so you may be able to
tuck it out if audible range behind the telly cabinet or something.

Better option: Unless you're streaming HDTV content, you can just use
wifi to a disk elsewhere in the house. If you are, you'll need a
100meg ethernet link.

I'd never buy a ready made external drive. Instead buy a 3.5" Icybox or
some other enclosure and put in the drive of your choice. No fans, and
you can pick the quietest drive. Cheaper too.
