my computer is a Acer Extensa 5620-6747. Last friday afternoon I was checking a movie and everything was fine. Friday night, the dvd player stopped working. The dvd player is detected by the computer and the driver is correctly installed. But when I try to play a music cd, a data dvd, a movie or a game the pc doesn't detect it. When I click on the player Icon in ''my computer'' it asks me to insert a dvd and the door of the player opens.

Try restarting. If it doesn't work, data cable of the drive (CD/DVD Player) may need to be reseated (pull out and plug back in) inside the computer. You may want to call manufacturer or a local tech (if not in warranty) if you don't know how to (just to be safe).
If it is Vista, Check your drivers. Other then that, What program are you using for burn? Sometimes re-installing the burner program that comes with burner (Or manufacturing support page for device) fixes the problem. Mean time you may need fragmentation if your computer need, fixes problem also. Last your CD burner optic eye not good anymore, so you need to get new one (Burner) make sure you will get exactly same burner prevent the driver issues(If needed)
check the player you use and make sure that all the types of music is checked for use, mp3's and any other type of file name that you use for your music, I personally check all the boxes in Media Player, and itunes to accept all formats of music. let me know if this helps..Steve, (somehow it looks like these box's became unchecked in error.
Just put in the blank dvd without trying to burn anything to it and see if your pc see's the blank dvd, if not find one that is recognized by your pc. After you put in a blank dvd, it should show under my computer in the drive and should be able to open it like a folder, or windows will pop up a little window that ask's if you would like to burn anything to the dvd.
go to device manager under System Properties. Locate DVD/CD Drives, expand it, select your drive, right click and then left click on properties, select the General tab and check the state of the device IT SHOULD indicate the device is working properly, if so or if not, select the Driver tab unomstall the driver, reboot, see if Windows will reinstall the driver as it should recognize the device as a new drive. If not return to the device manager and reinstall the driver.
