Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hard drive won't power up, even after replacing supply.

I have a Western Digital 250gb essential edition and have had it for long enough such that it is no longer under warranty.

About eight months ago, I went to turn it on, and nothing happened. No lights. Nothing. I figured it was the power supply. Several months later, I eventually got around to purchasing an identical power supply. I know it was identical because I puchased it by serial number. Excited, I plugged it in and anticipated the usual whir and click of a living hard drive. Again, nothing.

I know these WD products have a history of breaking. My question: how do I take apart this hard drive and fix it, or how do I recover the data myself? I do not have the hundreds to thousands of dollars it will cost to send it to a professional service.

Mine never powered up from the first time I tried to use it. I had purchased 2, used one which was fine, then months later went to use the other one... and nothing. It was too late to bring it back to the store. I asked a rep at Photoshop World about getting a replacement. She gave me her business card and told me to email her the serial number info, etc.; I did and never heard beck from her after emailing her a couple of times. I will never purchase another one again. I am having problems with files being corrupted on a 2 TB drive at work now too :-(

I too had the same problem with my My Book Essential and I actually got it to work...
I had tried to plug it into my PC and low and behold it didn't power up, the light didn't come on and there was no activity whatsoever so I began with the process of elimination starting with several different chords both power and USB.. Nada! Then I took the case off to see if the power adapter was loose on the board.. Nope! Then I used a Voltage tester on pretty much every where that could be checked and the power board was fine, although I couldn't get a reading from two of the pins that goto the actual part that plugs into the board attached to the drive. Then I went on to test that board and there was no power going to it... in fact there was no power in either board when they were connected together. The power board only had power when it wasn't connected to the drive board.. I gotta say I was stumped!! So from there I decided to open up my PC, unplug my cd rom drive and use those connectors to plug in my My Book and the drive worked... I got a fat 32 warning message but continued anyways and the drive powered up and all was great!! I had access to the drive like normal. I then thought hmmm lets try and re attach the power board and see if it works.. and it did! It's back in it's case and working fine.. Don't really know what the cause of the problem was but it did fix it so I hope this helps some or all of you. But please know that I NEVER had any clicking noise like some of you describe.. Just had no power... Good luck

Change the power supply of the hard drive and everything will be fine. Just remember make a Scandisk after you do this. If you need further assistance or have further questions just leave a comment. Cheers

My Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB hard drive was working fine, until the power cord was removed accidentally. Now I can't get any computer to recognize the drive when I plug it in the USB...

Is the power light on, if not replace the power supply.
I f you have light then your hard drive is shot or the circuit inside the box is fried.
If it is out of warranty and you have another Western Digital Sata drive handy you can swap it with the one inside to see if the drive is bad.
Good luck.

Western digital passport i/o device error

90% of the time this is a power problem. The USB port on the computer can not supply enough watts. Use an external USB hub that has a 5V power supply.
