If it is a dark brown stain then it is most probably a blown or leaked capacitor,or maybe a burnt out processor if the mark is opposite cpu.
the easiest way to test a motherboard is with a post test device.
you could alternately test all the components in another machine.i.e. cpu, ram, graphics, to make sure the are all alright.

there is a set of wires which connects the pc casings to the motherboard, responsible for all the buttons and indicators in the casing and front panel. check if you able to reconnect it, if you did, check if you did it right. this is not same in all pc but most likely similar

Emachines 5210 wont start up - monitor goes to power saving mode - no beeps but all fans & mobo powere active

Sounds like you have some type of hardware failure. If you are comfortable taking apart the system, start by removing the memory. If this system beeps then you know that your motherboard is still OK. But right now I am thinking that you may have a faulty motherboard.

Hp pavillion media center a 1540n motherboard.....computer cpu fan runs, power supply runs, when i hold the switch it won't power-down unless i un-plug computer....no video (not even bios) does this mean...

Hello!

Try clear cmos, if the motherboard bad you must wait so long, maybe you can turn on computer, and they can work perfect, but when you turn off computer on power suply, you can´t again turn on computer.
If this so you have trouble with motherboard.
