Question about Apple iPod shuffle Second Gen. Silver (1 GB) MP3 Player (MA564LL/A)
Ever since I got my iPod Shuffle 2nd generation about a year ago there have been problems with it. Often when I hooked it up to my laptop via the charging dock, I could not access itunes at all; clicking the itunes icon produced nothing. Some times it would connect with no problem, and that's when I would use the opportunity to add and edit my playlist. However because it's been so tempramental I have not even looked at it for about 6 months. (Instead I've been using my cheapo $39 MP3 player) Last week I decided to try again. It connected just fine and there was no problem. Three days ago I hooked it up again, and the computer could not see it. I got the "ding" sound indication that it was connected, but I could not load iTunes or find the ipod. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software; I followed a problem solver's advice to delete it from device manager(?), unplugged, plugged in, turned it on and off.... everything that was suggested, and no result. Today I brought it with me and plugged it in to my work computer, only to get a message saying something about power over load on a USB port(?????)... and the screen froze up. Had to do a hard shutdown... and the hard drive died! So now my work computer (!!!!!) is off for dianostics and repair... a MAJOR PROBLEM!!!!! Tonight I'm back on my laptop; have NOT plugged the #$%@ thing in but clicked on itunes.... and wonder of all wonders... it all shows up!
What is going on? Any suggestions???

Get a new cable if everything else works that is your problem
Usually, unplugging, replugging it and then rebooting solves the problem.
your other options are a driver issue..either with the ipod drivers, itunes, or the USB drivers for your computer itself. since your ipod video and psp work fine, you can rule out USB drivers, but that doesn't rule out additional driver problems.
the other option is there's some kind of failure with your ipod..and sometimes if a device starts drawing power before doing any kind of communication with the computer (like when my rockbox-hacked ipod goes into charge only mode) then windows will assume there's a hardwire issue. the best way to determine if it's an issue with your ipods are take them to another computer and see if they work. if they work fine...try uninstalling and reinstalling itunes (back up your music and database) and see if that solves the problem. if none of that solves it and you know the ipod shuffles are good..then your system has suffered from the mysterious driver failure that's plagued a lot of systems. and generally the only real solution is to reinstall windows from scratch.

SOURCE: My ipod wont turn on or charge.
More than likely the battery just needs to be replaced. I let my nano go dead and it was doing the same thing. So just get it replaced and that should fix your problem.

Use the Five Rs to restore the iPod. You will lose the data that is currently on it if you restore but you can always re-sync the data to the iPod.
