Your drive belt may have broken if it smelled like rubber burning. If that is the case then your motor bearing are worn out or something has been lodged between your dryer drum and the dryer housing. If the smell was the odor of burning plastic, then your motor is probably burned up.

SOURCE: dryer quit getting hot

I would suggest that your thermostats/cut-outs have gone as a result of overheating .. Also replace the door switch as this is a safety device to stop the drum from rotating whilst the door is open

Dryer was running and sparks flew out the back

probably the heating element had a hot spot in the coil of the element and it either sagged from heat and touched the case of the dryer and arced which threw sparks or it just separated with the same results

Dryer was working it stoped and smelled like something burning .

You should call a repairman. Sounds like a thermostat that failed and the heat built-up inside the heating chamber until the machine stopped. This would be a gas therm and replaced by a qualified repairman. Unplug the machine and don't attempt to operate it as it might lead to a fire.

Dryer trips circuit breaker smell almost like something burning coming from dryer

In order to trip a circuit breaker, there is almost for sure, a dead short to ground. Takes quite a bit to trip a breaker. The smell is most likely something electrical burning. Stop resetting the breaker and have it checked out. Continous resetting and tripping can cause more damage. The breaker is doing it's job.

Scraping noise with burning smell

You quite possibly have something like a penny or a paper clip stuck at the heat duct. ***First-shut off the electric to the dryer***. From behind the dryer, remove the heat tunnel and clean it out. You will be surprised how much lint gets past the filter. It's an easy repair, just a few screws. While you're back there, look around for any buildup in other areas.
