Question about Hard Drives

Laptop cannot find maxtor basics hard drive.

I currently uploaded some files to my external hard drive and one of them must have been corrupt as it said it needed to reformat the hard drive but i had to cancel the format before it had finished and now my laptop, xbox 360, everything will not recognise the hard drive so i can't get to it to format it.

Use this guide here to enter the Windows Disk Management console:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_management.htm

Just right-click the appropriate disk and initialize or re-format from there. That will take care of your problem.

Remember intializing or formating the drive will make you cause you to lose all of the data on the drive. If that's OK, perfect. If not, let me know and we'll go from there.

Trying to transfer data from an old harddrive i have (maxtor, diamondmax plus 9 80 GB ATA / 133 HDD) to My HP laptop

Install the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case the plug this USB hard drive into the USB port in your laptop. The laptop will see it as an external storage device, open the various folders and copy the files to your laptop.
You can delete any unwanted files off this external USB hard disk and use it for backups and file transfer.

I purchased a maxtor drive ~3yrs ago when I got a new laptop from my company. I successfully saved c:drive components to the new drive. I am now about to get another new laptop and am trying to copy...

Well, you could create a folder on your c:drive (call it something meaningful) and save all your current stuff to this folder.
Ideally you want all your original saved stuff in one folder, and all your new saved stuff in a different folder on the drive, that way you can manage and navigate around your saved data and understand clearly where it is and where it's from.
Hope this helps!

I need to know the power rating for a Maxtor 160GB external Hard Drive for use with a Yamaha PSRs-900 keyboard. Yamaha requires the rating to be not greater than 500-600mA

The Maxtor STM901601EHD301-RK is part of the Maxtor Basics Portable family.

It uses a 2.5 inch Internal harddrive inside. (2 and a half inches across the Width. Same size used for a laptop. Desktop's use 3.5)

It connects with a USB Style A male plug, via the USB cable.
It's has a 160GB storage capacity, has an 8MB Buffer, (Cache), and an External Data Transfer Rate of 60 MegaBytes per Second.

Other than that, I find no more information from Seagate, (Seagate bought out Maxtor, and has the data base for Maxtor products)

http://hddlist.com/maxtor/all/maxtor_basics_portable

What I do know in reference to your question.
I know that the USB 2.0 technology uses 5 Volts DC. The Positive pin on the USB plug will support up to 5 Volts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USB.svg

[Viewing a USB-A style plug, view it with the white plastic spacer at the bottom. Open part at top. The Positive pin is all the way to the right. The Negative pin all the way to the left. The Data + pin is on the left next to the Negative pin. The Data - pin is on the right, next to the Positive pin]

The Maximum current draw is 500 mA for a USB 2.0 port.
[ Current is rated in Amperes, or Amp's. You are looking at Millionths of an Amp.
Milliamp, or abbreviated as mA]

This would lead me to believe that the Maxtor Basics Portable external harddrives will not use more than 500 Milliamp's.

However I do not feel comfortable, telling you that it is okay to use your Maxtor STM901601EHD301-RK, on your Yamaha PSR2-900 keyboard. Would hate to be mistaken, and have you burn out the finals of your keyboard.

I do feel comfortable with the following suggestion.

What about transferring as much data as you can from the Maxtor Basics Portable, to a USB thumb drive? They have large thumb drives now, and hold a lot of data.

Most programs will fit on a large USB thumb drive.
Or am I missing the point somewhere?

Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

Right Click on My Computer, click on Manage, go to Disk Managment, if the drive is available you will see it there. Check to see if it has a drive letter assigned to it, if not right click on it and choose Change Drive letters. Make sure you are on the external drive though, you don't want to change your C drive accidentally. It should pop up in My Computer.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.
