I have a Dell 1720dn. The fist page keeps printing jibberish followed by the document. Its an intermittent problem. I'm thinking firmware update maybe??

Try these.

Reset the Photoconductor Drum Counter
1. Turn off the power using the switch on the back of the printer.
2. Open the front door of the printer.
3. Hold Continue button down, power on the printer, and continue to holding Continue down until the LEDs begin to flash.
When the LEDs start to flash, release
Continue button. The LEDs will continue flashing until only Error LED will be lit.
4. Close the front door. Continue, Ready/Data, Toner Low and Load Paper LEDs should be lit.
5. Wait till the printer completes the POST process.
POST is complete when fan noise and rollers stops.
After POST wait for 5 seconds

6. Press Cancel button 4 times slowly until the Toner Low LED is lit.
This is the procedure resetting the counter.

7. Press and hold Continue until all LEDs begin to cycle in sequence, then release Continue.
Now only the
Toner Low LED will be lit.
8. Cycle the power of the printer.

- Remove the power cable

- Wait for 5 seconds

- Plug the power cable back to the printer

- Power the Printer on

Typically it's the software program that installs with the printer. (I can't remember the exact name, sorry) If you can, uninstall the drivers and install using the 'install printer' option via control panel. This will install the printer driver only.

Most Dell techs won't know this in all honesty. It's a very rare problem. :)

The printer prints a blank page with a line of gibberish in the upper left corner before it prints the real page.

Can you send me a "print to file" of the failing document.

At first blush it can be either of two things.

1) The preceding print job did not properly clean out the printer's memory.

2) The new print job, has data or a busted escape command in it that is being treated as printable data.

Send the print file to don.farr@hotmail.com and I'll read through the document header to see what's going on.

My printer jammed in the middle of a page and after I turned it off, pulled out the paper and turned it back mon its printing 1 line of jibberish and pushing out the rest of the page blank, page after...

Your printer queue still contains fragments of your print job
  1. Remove print job at your computer if listed
  2. Turn off printer
  3. Disconnect printer power supply
  4. Reconnect printer power supply
  5. Turn on printer
Your queue should be empty now.

Dell 1720dn takes extra blank page at end of job and jams

There are rubber rollers that grab the paper to pull it through typically these get slick over time and will cause the printer to grab an extra sheet of paper. How I usually fix this problem is to check and see if the rollers are slick if so then I take an Emory board to them to rough them up just a little bit. I have also in the past used clear finger nail polish on the roller and that has helped. I would apply a bit of the clear polish to the roller, if it did not work then I would take the Emory board to it.

Normally to fix a printer that is printing gibberish, uninstalling and reinstalling the print drivers will fix this issue. Another thing that can contribute to gibberish print is using a USB cable that is too long.

With this particular problem (prints Zen), one solve is to uninstall any Dell toner management software. This is particularly true if you are running Vista and hooked up by USB. To uninstall the toner management software (Vista OS), go to control panel>programs>programs and feature>uninstall a program. From this list choose Dell software, choose a customized uninstall, and then choose anything that has to do with Dell toner management.

Printer prints first page with strange nonsensical characters

I would move the printer to another computer. See if the problem follows. I have seen the issue a few times with issues in normal.dot but also in other office applications.

Problem I'm fighting with on my 1720 is its printing extra pages between pages. basically print a 5 page document and get an 8/9 page final with the extra blank pages. Think its a user error but could be machine related. going to try it on another PC and see what happens.
