It sounds like you may have a ram problem (or a malware infection).

Download, install and run this program to scan/clean your machine, if you have to boot into safe mode (with networking if possible) to do it (hit F8 during boot) you will be able to rule out a malicious program issue.

Press F8 as the computer boots up.

Choose "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"

Let me know if you're able to get that far and then we'll proceed from there.

First thing you need to do is change my rating to FixYa!

Just kidding. You can after we fix your problem.

    OK

Now that you're in a dos box it should be asking you for your Administrator password. (I'm doing this from memory since I use Linux now)

Majority of the time just pressing the enter key will suffice. If not I hope you remember the password or that means more work for us.

OK so then you'll see something like

c:\documents and settings\user blah blah blah

    just type:

    chkdsk /r

A long winded message will pop up saying your disk is locked..blah, blah, blah

Just hit the "Y" key and press enter.

Then press Ctrl+Alt+Del and a box will pop up.

That box will have a button that says "shutdown / restart" somewhere. Just poke around you'll find it easily.

The computer will restart and then a disk check will be performed on both your file system and your physical hard drive. You don't have to sit there watching it just give it a few minutes and it will do it's thing. Hopefully that will get you back into windows.

Once it does I'll give you a few more tips.

Is this XP or Vista? Do you have a XP or Vista cd? NOT A RESTORE CD.

  • RescueTechLA

Let me know if you have that cd or not.

Well that makes things a bit more difficult. Have you got any important files on the hard drive that need to be saved? If not I can guide you through a System Restore.

I knew you were going to say that. OK well I would recommend you borrowing a Vista CD unless someone else has another suggestion on the boards here. There are a number of ways to fix the problem but the simplest ways are usually the best.

You could always buy an external enclosure and remove the hard drive from your laptop, transfer the files to another computer, then reinstall the hard drive and use the System Restore function.

Those are the two easiest ways that I can think of. Let me know which route you plan on taking.

Toshiba screen press f2 for set up and f12 bios management

I guess a new software install could have caused the issue. The could be conflict between devices.

Remove all the USB devices connected to the laptop. Remove external mouse and keyboard also if any.

Try booting. If it still does not boot then restart system and keep pressing F8 to view the boot options. If you get the boot screen then choose Safe mode option and try booting in to the desktop. Once the desktop is available go to Start-> Accessories-> System Tools-> System Restore to restore your system to a previous date.

If F8 does not work then probably you can do a complete reinstall of the OS by pressing F11 or Ctrl+F11. You will lose all the data in the system using this option and the system will be restored back to its factory settings. (This option works only if the laptop has manufacturer provided OS in it)

else you need to contact Toshiba tech support for any hardware related issues

Hope it helps !
Good Luck !
