I've emptied the ice box, defrosted the freezer but when I switched it back on there was still the terrible whirring noise. Is this a motor issue? if so, is it fixable?
SOURCE: Intermittent Loud Whirring Noise
sounds like the evaputaor fan motor.. may need to replace.. check to see if anything maybe hitting fan blades
SOURCE: samsung side by side refridgerator making noise and freezing
its a heater cycle problem..the defroster is not working properly. its building up ice in the evaporator that touches the evaporator fan that makes that loud noise but stops when you open a door. it could be either a bad heater, a bad thermo disc or a bad timer.hope i was able to help

I don't usually buy the service plan but I did for this unit (hey it's gen 1). The service guy said he has seen this problem quite a bit and that LG created a new RCM board to fix it (part# BBR34917104). Apparently the OEM board didn't detect the ice build up on the fan motor very well. I had the new board installed two days ago and defrosted the freezer. So far so good, I'll post again if I have any further issues.

Thanks Clint!
Here are the parts required for this repair; The IM is here and the water valve is here. If you have a local appliance parts retailer, they should have these in stock.
You'll need to lift the freezer drawer off of the rails and set it aside. I always use a towel to lay on the freezer floor at this point... now, you'll need to be laying inside the freezer. With a 1/4" nut driver (or socket, 8" extension and ratchet), remove the 3 screws holding the IM to the wall. Drop the IM down and disconnect the wiring harness from the rear wall. Pull the white front cover off of the old IM and put it on the new one.The new IM can now be installed in reverse order and the freezer drawer can be hung back on the rails. That's it for the IM!
Now for the valve... Pull the fridge out, unplug it and turn off the water at the wall valve. See where the water hose connects to the fridge? That's the valve in question. Remove the metal grill and the cardboard. Now remove the water hose from the valve. Then remove the screws mounting the valve to the fridge. OK, now you have it in your hand. The tubing on the old valve may be connected differently than the new valve.
Hold the old and new valves side by side and compare them. The new valve doesn't have threaded connections for the tubing. The tubing just pushes into their respective slots. Since this is the case, just cut the tubing from the old valve as close to the valve as you can. Then all you have to do is install the tubing and the wire harness into the new valve and rebuild/re-mount every thing. Don't forget to turn the water back on at the wall and check for leaks before you push the fridge back into place, OK?
There ya go! The IM should have your Ice bin filled up within 24 hours. Hope this helps. If so, don't forget to rate the solution.
