Question about Seagate ST307504FPA1E3-RK FreeAgent Pro 750 GB USB / eSATA / FireWire 400 External Hard Drive

1 Answer

Burnt the circuit board on my Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750 Gb by connecting it directly to a 12 V DC source (my boat) Seagate chat-help says they consider the product non-servicable but I just need another board or an alternative power supply. The board is produced by Lantek and may be the same for the other Pro models like the 500 Gb

I just called Lantek at 4122798700 to ask about soldering on my board. They're going to call me when they find something out.

Seagate 750GB usb HDD asks to format, when opening by double click

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.

Seagate hard drive will not power up

You have to be running NT, XP or Vista to access the drive. I take the power cable out, then plug it back in. Or try rebooting with the hard drive plugged in. Also purchase a USB Extension port so you can unplug the USB when not in use to stave off overheating. Go to Seagate and download Seatools. Also Download the source code for the drive while you are there.

Dead Freeagent 500GB Drive...

I don't know which drives they use in Freeagent, or even how you open the case (don't remember seeing any screws on mine), but Seagate drives (baraccuda especially) are known to have a weakness with the diode between 12V and Ground.

If it seems like it's shorting, (put a meter across the power input before you bother opening it - if it's reading about 1 Ohm, this may be your issue) might be worth opening the case and checking for a small square surface-mount diode marked BUX C??? (? being a variable number). If it's shorted, then clip it out for a quick-and-dirty backup of your data & bin the drive, or fix with a suitable replacement diode (SMD 1N4004 has been suggested).
