Hi Jerry
What Model....?
Using a mobile phone camera would have helped in this situation.
Before taking things apart
I'll be very surprised if someone has the same speaker system in bits somewhere
An electronics guy would trace the wire back to it's source to decide what it's being used for.
Good Luck
Sounds like you might have a wire loose at the other side of the controller. This is a easy thing to find out. Just unscrew the side screws that hold the back board to the cabinet. Don't unscrew the screws connected to the speaker wire clips unless the back doesn't come off. Just look for a disconnected wire at the controller jack then put it back. If there is no loose wire then you might have a bent female contact at the outside of the controller jack. You would have to look for this looking into the holes where you plug the cable into the controller jack. If you see a bent contact then use a thin nail of ice pick and insert it into the hole where the bent connector is to try to re open the contact so the cable can slip into it easy. Don't forget to unplug the power first.
There should be a green color cable (3.5mm in size) coming out of one of the speakers. That cable connects to the green color port in the back of the computer.
If your still having trouble please comment back with the model of the speakers... Altec Lansing Series 100 Model ??? and brand name and model of the computer. If it's not a brand name computer but a generic PC, then the brand name and model of the motherboard.
I have to turn the volume to max to hear any sound. Up until now the speakers were great and only needed to be turned on slightly? any suggestions please?
