Hi iainrusk,
what operating system are you using (following Microsoft, this webcam will work with Windows Vista™ or Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) only)? Are you using one of them?
If yes, please disconnect the camera from your computer, open the device manager of your computer and maximize that window. Now connect the camera to the computer (preferably to one the the USB-ports of the computer, not to a USB-hub!) and watch what is going on at the device manager. Normally the cam should be installed without problems and then you can see the respective entry under "Audio, Video and Gamecontroller". If not, the entry "Unknown device" should appear within the "USB-controller" section. In case this is happening, you should disconnect the cam. install the software which came with the cam and - after you did so - reconnect the cam again. Now everything should work fine...
If not, please come back here and let us know!
Good luck and greetings from Germany,

    Hi iainrusk,

are you using McAfee security software on that computer? If yes, please check this:

Did you setup the cam with MSN Messenger correctly (in case you didn't, please follow this procedure)?

    1. Please start Windows Live Messenger and maximize the application window.

    2. On the right side you should see "Show
Menus". Please click on that and then click on "Show the Menu Bar".

    3. On the menu bar please click on "Action".

    4. Click "Tools" and then "Audio and Video Setting" and follow the
      instructions given there.
Finally you should check that no other application (like Skype, Yahoo Messenger or others) are accessing the cam while you want to use it with MSN.

Please let me know if you would need any further help!

    Kind regards,

    Hi iainrusk,

don't worry, I guess we will make it finally!

Did you try to stop monitoring the MS Live Messenger by McAfee's Site Advisor? If not, please follow these steps:

    1. Navigate to the following folder:

      Windows XP/2000/Vista (32-bit): C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor

      Windows Vista (64-bit): C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\SiteAdvisor

    2. Right-click the file sasets.ini and select Open With, then select Notepad.

    3. Locate the section titled [msnmsgr.exe].

    4. Change Enabled=1 to Enabled=0.

    5. Click File and select Save.

    6. Close sasets.ini and restart your computer for changes to take effect.
Let me know if it worked!

    Good luck and greetings,

I have 8 Mega Pixel Microsoft LifeCam, I have plugged it into my computer however, I don't know to use it

Your webcam will start automatically whenever you launch a video application. Try testing it on The webcam should come right up after you click Allow access. The same thing happens on Skype, Yahoo Messenger, or MSN afte ryou download their application. If you just want to record webcam videos and pictures on your hard drive try one of the free programs you can download off the Internet. I happen to like the free version of Debut, and find it easy to use on my HP laptop.

Webcam doesn't work on WLM.

Test your webcam here to make sure it broadcasts ok - Hit 'Allow' in the top window and check your cam in the left hand panel.

Having proved your cam is working ,you can configure it to WLM (MSN)

Its good practice to disconnect and re-connect your webcam before you start - if you have been using it elsewhere the MSN software may have difficulty in locating it, even if you exited the previous program correctly.
The reason being, the webcam software can remain hooked-up to a program and needs to be rebooted.
Mine, I just unplug it from the USB and plug it back in to reboot the software.
If yours is integral with the computer you will have to re-start the computer, use a keyboard shortcut or disable / enable the webcam from the Device Manager.

Open MSN
Click 'Open Menu'
From 'Tools; navigate to, and click, 'Audio and Video setup'
Set your speakers
Click 'Test' - if OK, move on.
Set your mic as default
Use the slider to set volume and test.
Click 'Next'
This takes you to the video setup
Your webcam should be broadcasting - if not - make sure the webcam is set as default - restart MSN
Use 'Webcam Settings'to fine tune the picture.
Click 'Finish'

Lifecam VX-3000 will not connect wth MSN Messenger?

It's not a driver problem based on the fact it works with other applications. Since it won't work with Messenger my strong suspicion is that's your culprit (Messenger)....even though it worked before.

Uninstall and try it again. When you uninstall make sure you delete any folders found in "Widows Explorer" that are under program files (not in Windows itself....or at least not at this point). Make sure you are using the latest version by the way since you are going to install it again anyway.

As to why it did not work you might want to check the Microsoft knowledge base...(there can be some sort of a conflict particularly if you updated software, downloaded patches, installed a new application, whatever).

If this doesn't your antivirus and Spybot search and destroy on the entire drive. If you are not running an antivirus AVAST or AVG are both excellent (and free as is Spybot.)

Let me know if this does not work....odds are it will. Tango

Will not work with yahoo

My Lifecam vx- 1000 wasn't working on Yahoo messenger initially. After hours of researching i came across the solution that worked for me.

In "properties" limit the USB bandwidth used - by unchecking "Auto" in configuration and decreasing the speed manually (bring it down from 6mbps to 3).

This is what worked for me, hope this helps!
