DBFMDX misunderstanding?

I am changing from the NTX-system to DBFMDX rdd.
The problem is, that I have problems with the dbf-files themselves: they are
changed!
I know that the first character of the file is an identification for
different dbf-systems (like Dbase III, IV, etc.).
But now, the first character changes to 143 (yes, a dbf with a .DbT).
This is not recognized by VO2.5b3(?)

What is the best way to create / check these index-files?

I Create them at startup of the app by using the info from the
Indexlist-prop of the DBserver.
