Question about Canon PowerShot A80 Digital Camera

1 Answer

LCD screen purple and distorted in Shooting mode

I have a Canon PowerShot A80 Digital Camera that recently began having intermittent problems with the LCD screen. While in Shooting (preview) mode, the LCD screen is purple and distorted, with a horizontal line across it that moves up and down vertically. Oddly, the camera can take photos just fine, and the photos appear normally when reviewing the images in Playback mode, so the problem appears to be limited to the preview image on the LCD screen before taking the photo. I thought the problem might be moisture related, but did not seem to disappear completely after allowing the camera to dry out for several weeks. Any ideas?

I found some useful info from responses to similar (not necessarily identical) questions on FixYa. In short, my problem appears to fall under the description provided by the Canon Customer Support Center (re: "Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory"). Some CCD image sensors are known to have internal wiring connectors that can fail if affected products are exposed to high temperature and/or high humidity. (I'm in Seattle, where we definitely have the high humidity, but not the high temperatures, at least not in winter!) Canon will e-mail me instructions for sending the camera back to Canon for inspection and repair, and if it turns out to be the known issue with the CCD image sensor, then Canon will cover the cost of the repair, regardless of warranty status, and will also cover the cost of shipping and handling. I hope this clarification will help others with similar issues.

My Canon Powershot SD630

Dear Peter,

It sounds to me as though your camera is experiencing the early stages of a CCD sensor problem. Users will often experience color changes and/or lines in their LCD screens when viewed in picture taking modes at this stage of the problem. Later on their sensors will ultimately fail completely and they will typicallt get nothing but a black screen.

To differentiate between a sensor problem and a LCD screen problem, try viewing your LCD screen in several different shooting modes (e.g. automatic, manual, program AE, etc) and then view your screen while in your menu (by depressing the menu button in any shooting mode). If you can clearly see your menu (OR, while in playback, pictures that were taken before the issue began) then it is your CCD image sensor and not your LCD screen.

If, however, all of these modes gives you the same distortion, it is your LCD screen itself that has experienced a problem. In either case, however, the primary solution is to send the camera in for service.

If you are under your 1 Year warranty this is usually no problem. If you are out of your warranty period and (and this is a BIG and) are capable of repairing your digital camera yourself, you have the alternate option of ordering just the defective part and installing it yourself. Replacment parts, however, come with no technical support and no instructions so make absolutely sure you are capable of repairing the camera should you choose this lower cost repair option. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB

Blurred and distorted view of the subject

Its possible that there is a CCD issue with your camera. I've been reading more and more people are having CCD issues with the S1-IS. The CCD is the part of the camera that captures the image, and usually they distort or do some funky things with the pictures. Its entirely possible they would knock something out of focus.

Your camera has a defective CCD imager. Please return the camera to Canon in New Jersey and they will replace the CCD at no charge to you. This is a known issue and should be covered under extended warranty. Good luck my friend. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
