110v 2 HP Waterway Spa pump sometimes does not start

My new last year 2 HP Waterway spa pump has only sometimes started  correctly. It often stays stalled with a moderately loud buzz or hum.
This has been true from date of purchase. It can be started by rotating the shaft once or more times and retrying.
I have been using the pump somewhat satisfactorily by programming the Balboa  VS 500 controller (which was installed new at the time) to continuous circulation. It switches perfectly between high and low speeds with the topside control button.
If the contact mechanism in the 2 horse is similar to that in a 1 1/2 HP I would presume this symptom could be caused by a very slight misalignment in the part in the switch when it occasionally stops at a spot in the 360 degrees of rotation that does not allow the switch to close properly.
I do not know if the switch in the 2 HP (110v) is similar to that in the 1 1/2 HP. I believe access is somewhat different. Not a lot of fun to get at pump!
The above ''suspicion'' was not thought of by me before a conversation that I had with Waterway.
They would accept the return of the pump in warranty.
It would almost seem to me with high shipping costs that I could get a local electric motor repairman to shift the switch a bit and I would have shorter down time.
I suffer from Myofascial Pain Syndrome and do not like to be without access to the spa to moderate the considerable pains when this is bothering me.
Any help appreciated.

Usually is a dead spot on the motor. a local motor shop can look into that however if it is under Waterway warranty I would pay the cost to get a new motor from them. These are expensive.

The pump motor should have a label on the side of the motor showing a diagram for Common, High speed, Low speed and the right positions for the connections.
Common is always the white wire
High speed is normally red

Pump acts like it is froze up. It hums and smells like it is burning when it runs. It hums then shuts off, hums then shuts off?

Either you need a new start/run capacitor or the bearings have seized. If it's been running loudly recently, the bearings have probably seized. If not, the start capacitor is probably bad. This can sometimes happen when the motor windings start to develop a short. If you replace the capacitor and it blows again, you'll probably need a new motor.
