anyone who signs in on windows live messenger on my pc has no contacts please help solutions im going out of my mind cheers chris

  • Anonymous Mar 12, 2009

To import the messenger file, you have to have a *.ctt file. I found mine, and it's a *.cache file. So the two programs are completely incompatible.

  • punjabian Mar 13, 2009

latst msn msngr live 2009 is nt showing my contacts........

  • Ali-Noodle Mar 13, 2009

Same deal here. But it wasn't like that right away. I was talking to my friends, I have been for a while, I've had this version for a while. I was talking to my friend [[let it be noted that we both have Msn PLUS as an add-on to MSN Messenger]], and I closed out my contacts screen because I always have, and it bugs me just being down there. I then wanted to see something on my other friend's PM, so I opened the list again and everything was gone. ;;-;; I WANT MY CONTACTS BACK.

Also, there's still contact with my friends. They still have their list, they can still contact me. I just can't open a conversation with them.

    SOMEONE HELP US D:

Right! I have just had this problem :(

BUT!! i managed to fix it ;)

Basically i went, Start| Default Programmes| (And clicked on Live Messenger Plus) Repair

It then gave me options to Uninstall or Repair: I Clicked Repair

It then gave me 3 tick boxes which said like "Delete Internet Scripts" (Something along them lines)
- I unticked them all

after it had repaired successfully, i signed in but i signed in as online and it worked!

Hope this works :)

This has affected millions of people all over the world, and although MSN has been trying to fix the problem, I believe the still have not done enough.

Aside that, here is what you need to do.

Click Start, click Run and type "regedit" without the quotes.

This will open the Registry Editor

Then, you will see My Computer and under that, there is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.

Double click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER and you will see software. click on it and you will see Microsoft. under Microsoft you will see MSNMessenger. After you click on that, scroll down until you see ProtocolHandlerLock.

This is "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger"

Double click that and you will see '0'. Just type 1 where the 0 is and click ok.

Then, close the Registry Editor and try downloading and installing the latest version of Windows Live Messenger.

Let me know if this works, because for some it will and others it won't.

After using Live Messenger 9 for a while, 1 day suddenly my contact screen was shown blank. I tried repairing it, like mentioned above (only for me I had to go to the control panel > add/remove programs > Windows Live Essentials > change (repair) it took 3 minutes to repair, I restarted the computer and my contact list was back.. THANKS!! (especially to Georgia15 who directed me to this solution)

Every time i start live messenger it says there are invitations, while there are non. also new contacts i add dont show up in my list until much later

This could be due to your contact space. I suggest you try deleting a few contacts if you have more than 400. If you have less than 400 then try downloading the new 2010 msn. Hope I helped MSN expert Dr Reed

1 Answer

All my contacts are missing from my contact list

This is what MS told me to do..but did not work. Finally they told me to use 8.5. Try if it helps you.

Messenger Connectivity Log & Contacts Log

A. Delete the old log files.

Right-click the Start button and then click Explore. In the window that opens, click Folder Options on the Tools menu. Click the View tab, and then make sure that Show Hidden files and folders option is selected.

1. Click Start, click Run, type %userprofile%\Local Settings\, and then click OK.
2. Double-click the Application Data folder, double-click Microsoft, and then double-click Messenger.
3. In the Messenger folder, look for the MsnMsgr.txt file and delete it.

Note: If you get an error stating that you cannot delete MsnMsgr, please make sure that Windows Live Messenger is not running on the background. To check this, open the Task Manager window and check whether the msnmsgr.exe is running on Processes. If it is, select the application and click End Process. If you are prompted, click Yes.

To open the Task Manager: Click Start and then Run. Type taskmgr.exe and click OK.

4. If you don't see the MsnMsgr.txt file, please proceed to step B to enable the connection logging.

B. Turn on connection logging if the feature is not yet enabled.

1. Start Windows Live Messenger but do not sign in.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. In the left navigation bar, click Connection.
4. Click Advanced Settings.
5. Under Connection Logging, make sure that the Save a log of my server connections to help troubleshoot connection problems check box is selected.
6. Click OK.

C. Try to sign in to Windows Live Messenger again to replicate the error or issue being encountered with the service. A new connectivity log file, MSNMsgr.txt, is created the moment a sign in attempt to the service is made. When errors or issues are encountered, the connection logging feature will capture their logs.

D. Access the newly generated MsnMSgr.txt by following the steps in step A. Please look also for the ContactsLog.txt file. Please attach the files on your e-mail response to us.

Copy of the Windows Live Contacts folder

The Windows Live Contacts folder can be accessed on this path:

C:\Documents and Settings\ Your Windows logon name \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

Note: Windows Logon name is the logon name that you use to sign in to Windows.

Right-click the Windows Live Contacts, select Send To, and then select Compressed (zipped) Folder. A compressed file is created in the same folder. Please upload the file to Windows Live SkyDrive and we will retrieve the file from there.

To access Windows Live SkyDrive, please do these:

  1. Open your Internet browser and visit http://skydrive.live.com.
  2. Sign in using your Messenger ID and password.
  3. Click on the Public folder.
  4. Click Add files and locate the zipped Windows Live Contacts folder. Upload it.
  5. Once the file is successfully uploaded, please send us the URL or link on your e-mail response so we can download it.

While we are working on this issue, we suggest that you temporarily use the earlier version of Windows Live Messenger (v8.5) so you can continue to communicate with your friends. Please note that to be able to install the previous version, you need to uninstall all the Windows Live Essentials programs (i.e. version 2009 of Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, etc.).

1. Exit Windows Live Messenger.
2. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter
3. On the Add or Remove Programs window, click on Windows Live Essentials, and then click Uninstall/Change
4. Select Uninstall, click Continue.
5. Under Select the programs you want to uninstall, check all the Windows Live programs shown and then click Continue.

Windows Live Messenger 8.5 can be downloaded from:

1 Answer

Contacts' names instead of email list.

The only two ways I've found is to right-click on the name, and then click on "Contact Details". In the lower left of the box that comes up, it will have their messenger ID, and you can store their e-mail address above it. Another way to do this would be to open up a chat window with a person, and their ID will be in the top bar, above the task bar.

Hope this helps!

Please try this. Delete or rename the following directories:

C:/users/%USERNAME%/contacts/%YOUREMAIL%
and
C:/users/%USERNAME%/appdata/local/Microsoft/Messenger/%YOUREMAIL%

where %USERNAME% is your username in Vista and %YOUREMAIL% is the email you use to connect to WLM.
