Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Gateway laptop, Model M-456-E. I did a "restore", but it obviously did NOT get the video driver for the LCD right. The screen keeps recycling (refresh) on both the laptop and the #2 LCD. I know that Gateway has gone away, but how can I locate and download the correct video driver?? Help please! **** Truex

    Richard,

Don't forget when you visit Windows Update to choose "custom" so that the hardware drivers will pop up. Let me know what happens.

Gateway On GZ7108 has no video on monitor..can here windows loading no picture

There are more than one scenarios for thi s..The first one .it may be a damaged video card ..but usually when teh video card is damaged you can not see anything at all ..not even teh devices being loaded..and in your case ..if you see anything on it when it starts it is not the card but just the display settings ..
second ..may be the display settings ...like I said ...and in this case you check if the main display was not disabled..by pressing the Fn key and the F key suggested for monitor ..(to be sure it is something like that use a external monitor and see if you have image ..)
3rd ..it may be the inverter for the display screen went bad ..and need to be changed..In this case if you look closely ..you have a shadow image on it..
It also may be a wrong driver being loaded or wrong settings on the driver ..settings that are not supported by the lcd screen ..and in this case will load the devices and you can see it starting ..but going black when it loads windows..and the action is to start windows in safe mode..(press the f9 or F8 to see the start modes) ..and in safe mode remove the video driver and install it again ..or try to engage the system restore for it ..and restore the settings to an earlier date when it worked..

I have a gateway netbook and the screen turns white after startup. What can I do to fix it?

Sure wish I knew the exact Model Number of this netbook. It's on the bottom in a white Service Tag, or sticker.

All I can give you is generic information.

On the back of the netbook, or on one of the sides, is a VGA connector. (Perhaps even the front)

This is a basic example of a VGA cable, and a VGA connector, (To the right is the connector),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

Netbook OFF, monitor OFF, connect the VGA cable of the monitor to the VGA connector on the netbook.

You can use a CRT monitor that looks like a small TV, or an LCD flat screen monitor that has a VGA cable.

Turn the monitor on. IF it is a CRT monitor give it a few minutes to 'warm up'.
Turn the netbook on.

IF the display does not automatically come up on the external monitor, (The VGA monitor), press, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the same time tap once on the Display toggle-over key.

Again generic information;
The Fn key is usually located on the Keyboard near the CTRL key to the left.
I have no idea where your Display toggle-over key is.

This key will be one of the Function keys at the top of the keyboard. Either F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, and so on.

There should be a monitor symbol on this particular key. Will look like an empty rectangle with rounded corners. Supposed to represent a monitor. There may be an arrow to one side of it.

The arrow represents the display moving over.

Different laptops, (netbooks), have different options.
Usual is;
1) Just the internal monitor of the laptop
2) Internal monitor of the laptop, AND the external monitor
3) External monitor Only.

Do to there being more than one option, you may have to tap the Display toggle-over key more than once.

A) White screen also shows on external VGA monitor?
You have a bad graphics chipset.

For most laptops, and I'm betting with this netbook, the graphics chipset is soldered directly to the motherboard. This is Integrated Graphics.

Another term for Integrated Graphics is OnBoard Graphics.
ON the motherBOARD.

This would mean replacing the motherboard.

(IF the netbook does indeed have a graphics card, the card could be replaced, and not the motherboard)

B) Display on external VGA monitor is okay?
There is a problem with the Display Assembly.

Essentially, the entire upper half of the netbook, is the Display Assembly.

1) Display Cover: The plastic top cover of the netbook.
2) LCD screen
3) Display Bezel: The thin plastic frame in front of the LCD screen. Resembles a picture frame
4) Inverter (Screen Inverter)
5) Webcam (IF installed)
6) Brackets which hold the LCD screen to the Display Cover, LCD screen frame, Hinges, various screws, and so on.

Primer:
1) An LCD screen does not produce light. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Lamp = Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale,

This example is just to show you where one type of Backlight is located, and what an average Backlight looks like,

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/

With a LOT of laptops, and probably this netbook, the general repair method for replacing a Backlight is to replace the LCD screen.

An LCD screen is composed of layers. These layers are held in place by the Display Frame. A thin metal frame which surrounds the outside edges of the LCD screen layers. Also resembles a picture frame.

As you can see from the above link, the Backlight is accessed by removing the Display Frame on one side, or all together. This allows the LCD screen layers to move around. They MUST be kept, or put back in the exact location they were in, as set by the factory.

This is why the general repair method is to replace the LCD screen, for those who do not possess the technical skill of replacing, OR the manufacturer does not offer just the Backlight bulb.
{LCD screen = $$$$$. Backlight bulb is usually around $15 to $30}

2) Inverter:
An Inverter converts the electricity from the laptop for the Backlight.
In 90 PERCENT of Display Assembly problems, the fault is the Inverter.

OR, it may just be a loose Video Cable, or Inverter Cable.
The connections may be loose.

This requires partially disassembling the netbook, down to the connection of the Video Cable TO the motherboard, to see if this connection is tight, and may also require disassembling the Display Assembly partway, to see if the connection of the Video Cable TO the LCD screen is tight.

{You cannot just eyeball the connections. They need to be physically checked to see if they are plugged in tightly}

Requires partial disassembly of the Display Assembly, to see if the connection TO the Inverter is tight, and FROM the Inverter to the Backlight is tight.

Connections prove to be tight, visually inspect the sheath of the Video Cable for obvious signs of damage. If the sheath is damaged, there is a good chance that one of the thin tiny wires inside it has become stretched, and is broken.

Obvious signs of damage, or not, I would suggest removing the Video Cable, and with a multimeter set to Ohms,(1K) check the continuity of the individual wires in the Video Cable.

Be sure the problem is not the Video Cable.

Video Cable proves to be good, replace the Inverter.

(Replacing an Inverter is a simple task, and the cost of the Inverter is economical enough to warrant this type of procedure, IMHO)

Still no satisfaction? Replace the LCD screen.

Post the Model Number in a Comment, and I'll make this solution more custom to THE netbook you have.

joecoolvette

Ethernet controller driver doesnt work

Use the support cd of the motherboard. It contains all the necessary drivers for your ethernet controller and video controller. If you don't have the installer then visit the website of the motherboard brand and there download the right driver of the motherboard model and the operating system that will be used by it.

Your screen settings are not optimized for that monitor, most Gateways (to h*&%) come with a drivers disks for the monitors put that in and run setup for the monitor.

Gateway profile 4 all in one computer

Before you buy anything else try it with another monitor. Obviously if the other monitor works then its not your motherboard its your monitor. Update video drivers to ensure you have the latest.

If the video card is an "onboard type" Is is not easy to replace. If you have a seperate video card, you may replace it with a like type, PCI, AGP,PCIe,etc. or if you computer has an open slot a video card can be added and turn off the "onboard video" in start up screen BIOS .    Since this is a GATEWAY(I do not know the model) computer you also always have the option of a complete restore . Below is their website to download al the info:

Gateway flat LCD dead

I'm not sure if your referring to the lcd monitor (gateway brand) or a laptop's lcd screen not working anymore.

1. if it's an lcd monitor...
a. test monitor in a different pc before assuming the problem is the lcd screen
b. replace the monitor if after testing monitor is in deed the item failing.

2. if it's the lcd screen from your gateway laptop.
a. you may be able to attach a regular analog monitor to the paralel port on your gateway.. test and see if the monitor that you attach will give you a picture (you may have to toggle with some some keys on your laptop keyboard to make have the signal going to the "externa" or attached monitor.
if the other monitor does not work either.. you video controller on your motherboard on your laptop may be failing and you may not have other options that to replace your laptop.
b. if the external/attached monitor works.. very likely the problem is the lcd screen for that you need to get a replacement and you may have to contact gateway to find out about pricing (or places to send your laptop for service if you're still within warranty). if you have an old laptop you may have to considere simply replacing the unit as buying a new lcd screen may very likely be more expensive than the same working laptop.
