I agree with you 100% on that. Maybe they'll come out with one, like
they did with the V325i (again, after I got mine).

Motorola is probably getting wise to these SEEM edits and are finding
ways to prevent them on their newer phones.

I like the phone myself. If it were available last July when I got my
V325, I might have gotten this phone. The issue with the V325 is that
it is a camera phone, and I can't take it too all of my work sites
because of the camera issue. The W315 does not have a camera, and
would present no problem for me to take it to my various job sites.

Maybe. But Motorola probably could care less. The number of Moto phones that
are sold *because* they can be hacked must be insignificant and if they were
locked down tighter they would lose those sales. It is the carriers that
want features crippled in order to sell metered services over the air. SEEM
edits just enable those features hat the carriers want turned off.

With the W315 it's not clear whether transferring pics & tones via USB is
possible or has been disabled by a flag. It seems very unlikely that the
differences between the W315 and the older Moto phones are there primarily
to thwart hacking. It was probably redesigned for other reasons and because
it''s new and low-end it has not attracted much interest yet.

Ditto!!! The W315 a terrific workhorse and the "lack" of camera is a *plus*!
I think manufacturers have ignored the business market. We need a solid
basic phone with great RF, great call quality, great battery life and *no*
!#$%^& camera, *no* music and *no* web, *no* "Get It Now", *no* games or
other consumer crap. Some way to load a business logo (i.e. pictures) and
more ringtones over the wire might be nice. But Bluetooth would be even
better because hands-free capability is a safety issue. The sad truth is
that no phone available now from any carrier addresses this need. If Moto
made a W315i (a BT enabled W315) and all major carriers offered it, it would
be ideal for this purpose.

First, a warning... you can "brick" (ruin) your phone by messing with it if you are not careful! So, BE CAREFUL. If you aren't comfortable with the procedure below, DON'T TRY IT. I won't be responsible for the results.

Wallpapers are easy, ringtones are hard. Get Bitpim (it's a free download, Google it) and install it. You'll need to know what COM port number your phone is using when connected. In settings, say "Other CDMA Phone" and select the correct COM port. After you save the settings, go to the View menu and choose Filesystem. This will add a Filesystem view to the display. Click the little "+" in the folder view, and wait (and wait) until the software loads the list of files on your phone.

You can put about any wallpaper sized up to 120x120 into the /brew/shared folder. After installing the wallpaper file(s), exit Bitpim and restart (turn off and back on) your phone, and the picture(s) you installed will appear in the Gallery.

Ringtones are harder because you must hex-exit a file in the phone's file system (and though I have done this, I'm not going to try to explain it). There is an explanation here:

... but it is not easy.

The problem is that with this particular moto phone "little info" is a
show-stopper. You can access the filesystem with BitPim. But it has a
different file structure from the older well documented (and hacked) moto
phones. AFAIK no one has published SEEM edits or any way to get ringtones or
pics onto the W315. It's probably not sexy enough to attract the interest of
folks with the knowledge or persistance to figure it out. Too bad. It's a
very solid no-frills phone that is just a phone. But it would be even better
to have some way to load custom background images and ringtones.

You have to do a "SEEM" edit.

The phone is quite new, so there is little info on it. But you can
find general information on Motorola phones and how SEEM edits work:
